5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Ontario Institute of Technology (Ontario Tech University) offers a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in mechanical systems and new technologies. The program offers a solid foundation in engineering fundamentals, in addition to covering new areas like renewable energy, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and mechatronics. Through a mix of theory and applied learning, students learn to design, analyze, and improve everything from engines and energy systems to automated machines.
Curriculum Structure
The Mechanical Engineering program at Ontario Tech is specially crafted to balance academic theory and practical application. Some of the highlights include:
Engineering Core – Courses in mathematics, physics, materials science, and thermodynamics make up the technical foundation.
Specialized Mechanical Courses – Courses such as fluid mechanics, mechanical design, dynamics and control systems, and heat transfer develop domain knowledge.
Design and Laboratory Work – Projects are carried out in laboratories equipped with industry-level equipment, giving invaluable practical experience.
Capstone Project – Final-year students work together to solve an industry-based engineering problem, showcasing their skills and ingenuity.
Accreditation
The program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), which positions graduates to fulfill national engineering standards and become qualified for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensing in Canada.
Campus Location
Ontario Tech's new Oshawa, Ontario campus offers access to state-of-the-art labs, research institutes, and collaboration spaces that reflect the university's focus on technology-driven education. The Mechanical Engineering program is housed in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, surrounded by an environment conducive to hands-on innovation.
Ontario Tech actively encourages students to apply their knowledge in experiential settings. Some of the outstanding experiential opportunities include:
Co-op and Internship Programs – The majority of students take part in paid work terms with companies like General Motors, Hydro One, and Ontario Power Generation, gaining real-world industry experience before they graduate.
Undergraduate Research – Students can work in association with faculty-led research projects, especially in areas like renewable energy systems, thermal science, or robotics.
Student Teams and Competitions – Mechanical Engineering students can join hands-on teams such as the Ontario Tech Motorsports Team or Robotics Club, competing in national and international engineering design competitions.
Global Learning Opportunities – The university also supports study abroad and international research exchanges, enabling students to obtain a wider perspective and build a global network.
Ontario Tech provides extensive support to help students make the transition from university to working life. Through the Career Centre, students have access to:
Career coaching, job search strategies, and networking advice
Resume-development workshops and individualized feedback
Mock interviews to increase confidence
Career fairs and employer events on campus
Employability
Mechanical Engineering graduates have gone on to work in industries as diverse as automotive and aerospace, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Employers value their strong technical base and project-based education. Some graduates have landed jobs at companies such as Bombardier, Magna International, Siemens, and GE.
Further Academic Progression
Graduates may also opt to continue master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Renewable Energy, or even switch to programs like Artificial Intelligence, Business Administration, or Industrial Design. Ontario Tech also has its own graduate programs, allowing students to continue their education under the same innovative environment.
