BEng Mechanical Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

York University

Program Overview

University of York offers a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering, a three-year undergraduate degree that enables students to design, analyze, and install mechanical systems and technologies. This program equips the students with the necessary knowledge to work in careers in several industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing.

Curriculum Structure
The University of York's Mechanical Engineering course combines theory and practice to provide a holistic education. The structure of the course is:
Common First Year: Every engineering student begins with fundamental subjects in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and fundamental engineering principles.
Core Mechanical Subjects: The students learn subjects such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material science, control systems, and heat transfer.
Laboratory and Design Projects: Practical laboratory classes and group design projects enable students to implement what they have learned in real-world situations.
Capstone Design Project: During the third year, students work as teams to address practical mechanical engineering problems, integrating skills and knowledge gained across the course.

Accreditation:
The BEng Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and thus the program is of high quality to be applied for professional engineering work in the UK.

Campus Location:
The University of York is situated in York, England, a city with a rich history and a lively community. The campus of the university provides top-notch facilities, such as specialized teaching rooms, laboratories, and workshops, giving students a great learning and research environment.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The University of York places a strong focus on experiential learning, providing students with many opportunities to put their knowledge into practice:
Year in Industry: Students can take a year-long industrial placement and gain valuable work experience and knowledge of the future career.
Undergraduate Research: Students can be involved in research projects under faculty guidance, increasing their knowledge of new areas of engineering.
Design Teams and Clubs: Students may join engineering design teams and clubs, doing projects and competitions that promote collaboration and creativity.
Global Learning Experiences: International exchange programs and internships enable students to develop a global perspective of engineering practices.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The University of York provides excellent career counseling to facilitate students' transition from studies to professional life:
Career Counselling and Planning: Individual career counseling helps students plan their career successfully.
Resume and Cover Letter Workshops: Workshops assist students in framing professional resumes and cover letters.
Interview Preparation and Mock Interviews: Students can hone interview skills through mock interviews.
Career Fairs and On-Campus Recruiting: The university hosts events which unify students and prospective employers.

Employability:
University of York Mechanical Engineering graduates are highly regarded by employers from various sectors, including aerospace, automotive, energy, and robotics. Graduates have gained employment in leading firms such as Boeing, Magna, Bombardier, and General Motors.

Continuing Academic Progression:
When students complete the BEng in Mechanical Engineering, they are able to progress to the postgraduate level to study Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or Sustainable Energy Systems. Some go on to study further to extend their skills into business with an MBA, or into new technologies in AI, clean tech, and entrepreneurship. The university's good reputation provides a good basis for admission into the world's best graduate schools.
