The study of religion is distinguished by the uniqueness of its subject matter and the diversity of its methods. It addresses this subject matter with the full range of investigative tools available by the various disciplines, especially modern historical and social-scientific human studies. Christianity originated in Roman occupied Jerusalem, a predominantly but not entirely Jewish society, with traditional philosophies distinct from the Classical Greek thought which was dominant in the greater Roman Empire at the time.
