BSc Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Prince Edward Island

Program Overview

The University of Prince Edward Island's BS in Biology is a four-year on-campus program offering a broad and general study of living things, from molecules to ecosystems. Students can graduate with a general BS in Biology or specialise in Life Sciences or Environmental Biology, gaining superior preparation for health careers, research, environmental analysis, or biotechnology.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll build a foundation with Introductory Biology (BIO 1310-1320), Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 1110-1120), Calculus (MATH 1120 or 1910), Indigenous Teachings of Turtle Island (IKE 1040), Physics for the Life Sciences (PHYS 1210 and 1220), and a first-year seminar (UPEI 1010, 1020, or 1030). Specialisation students also take Human Health (BIO 1020) or Animal Health (BIO 1030).

  • Year 2: Includes Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2410-2420 or 2430), Statistics (STAT 1210), and core Biology courses such as Botany (BIO 2020), Zoology (BIO 2040), Microbiology (BIO 2060), Cell & Molecular Biology (BIO 2210), and Genetics I (BIO 2230), in addition to electives specific to your stream of interest.

  • Year 3: Offers more advanced classes like Physiology of Cells and Organisms (BIO 3260) or Evolutionary Biology (BIO 3820), Biochemistry (CHEM 3530 or BIO 2250), and several Biology electives at the 2000-level or higher. Environmental and Life Sciences majors offer specialised electives and research methods courses.

  • Year 4: Specialises in upper-year electives, for example, a minimum of two 4000-level courses in Biology. Honours thesis (BIO 4900) or more advanced research projects may be undertaken by students, with further specialisation possible through elective selections.

Focus areas: Cell and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, environmental biology, marine biology, biotechnology

Learning outcomes: Scientific research and analysis, laboratory and field, critical thinking, interpretation of data, scientific communication

Reputation (employability rankings): Recorded for strong undergraduate study and faculty advisement; UPEI Biology graduates are adequately prepared for careers in the environment, research, and health.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Biology program at UPEI includes experiential learning through laboratory courses, fieldwork, and undergraduate research. Students take advantage of the university's Experiential Education department, which organises co-operative education, career services, and work-integrated learning.

Experiential highlights include:

  • Laboratory classes: In ecology, physiology, microbiology, and genetics, which involve hands-on experience with microscopy, molecular, and dissection techniques

  • Field work: In the local ecosystems and marine environments

  • Undergraduate research projects and Honours thesis: (BIO 4900) under faculty direction

  • Participation in the Experiential Education office: Co-op placements, internships, and community-based projects

  • Scientific communication competence: Through poster presentations and research seminars

  • Career guidance assistance: Through job listings, workshops, and networking opportunities

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the University of Prince Edward Island’s BS in Biology program are highly employable, moving into roles such as research biologist, laboratory technologist, environmental consultant, biotechnology specialist, and science educator. Many alumni also pursue professional programs in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, or graduate research, supported by UPEI’s strong pre-professional pathways and hands-on training.

Here’s how UPEI specifically supports your future:

  • Career Services: UPEI offers career advising, résumé and interview workshops, job fairs, and a range of scholarships (e.g., UPEI Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship, International Scholastic Achievement Prize) to support academic and professional development.

  • Employment Stats & Salary: While specific UPEI biology salary data isn’t published, Canadian biology graduates typically start between $45,000–$55,000 CAD per year, with higher earnings as you gain experience or pursue further credentials.

  • Industry Partnerships & Research: UPEI’s Biology Department partners with the Atlantic Veterinary College, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and the Institute for Nutrisciences and Health, offering students hands-on research, fieldwork, and internship opportunities. Faculty research spans neurobiology, cancer cell biology, watershed ecology, pollination biology, aquatic toxicology, and more.

  • Accreditation: The BS in Biology is fully recognised in Canada and internationally, and offers specialisations in Life Sciences (including Pre-Veterinary Medicine) and Environmental Biology.

  • Graduate Outcomes: Students gain extensive lab and field experience, can complete an Honours thesis (with advanced research and communications courses), and develop strong scientific, analytical, and communication skills. The program emphasises experiential learning, preparing graduates for both employment and further study.

Further Academic Progression: After your BS in Biology at UPEI, you can pursue a Master’s or PhD in Biology or related fields at UPEI or other universities. The program also prepares you for professional degrees in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and education, supported by UPEI’s strong research environment and faculty mentorship.
