Program Overview

Pain signal process in the brain, chronic pain mechanisms related to dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and the spinal cord and the signal transduction in DRG neurons are currently investigated. Acupuncture research is in the leading position over the past decades. It was found that electroacupuncture stimulation can suppress acute and chronic pain. Acupuncture with different frequencies induces the release of different kinds of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides in the central nervous system (CNS). Based on these findings, a device entitled Han s Acupoint Nerve Stimulator (HANS) has been developed. This method is also called acupuncture without a needle . Modern comprehensive methods including brain imaging techniques, event related potentials (ERP), multichannel recording, electrophysiological, molecular biological, immunohistochemical and behavioral methods have been used.
