Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Eastern Finland

Program Overview

The Information Technology programme at the University of Eastern Finland is designed for students who want to turn their interest in technology into real-world digital solutions. You will build strong skills in programming, software design, data management, and human-computer interaction, while enjoying the flexibility to combine IT with minors such as business, data science, or even law — creating a personalised study path that fits your career goals.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Strong Foundations

Your first year focuses on developing core computing skills. You begin with Basic Programming, Algorithms, and Data Management, learning how software works and how data is structured and processed. You will also explore Human-Computer Interaction, understanding how people and technology connect, while starting to choose minor subjects that broaden your expertise.

Year 2 – Developing Technical Depth

In the second year, you progress to Advanced Programming and Software Design, where you learn to build larger and more complex systems. Algorithmic thinking deepens, and your chosen minor subjects — such as business or data science — give your IT knowledge real-world context beyond pure coding.

Year 3 – Applying Knowledge in Practice

By your third year, learning becomes increasingly project-driven. You work on collaborative assignments that mirror industry environments, take advanced IT courses, and complete studies that prepare you to move seamlessly into the Master’s phase without needing to reapply.

Focus Areas

Programming, algorithms, software design, data management, human-computer interaction, and interdisciplinary minor studies.

Learning Outcomes

You graduate with strong programming and system-design skills, the ability to analyse and manage data, an understanding of user-centred technology design, and readiness for advanced IT careers or Master’s-level specialisation.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme awards a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and continues directly into a Master of Science in Information Technology, offering a smooth academic and professional progression pathway.

Reputation (Employability & Recognition)

UEF is known for its close collaboration with regional technology companies, and many IT students secure internships or job offers before graduation — reflecting the programme’s strong employability focus.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Eastern Finland, Information Technology students learn by doing, not just by listening. From your first year, courses are designed to be practical and project-driven — meaning you apply programming, software design, and data skills to real tasks rather than only theoretical exercises. Your studies take place on UEF’s modern Joensuu and Kuopio campuses, where digital learning environments, collaborative classrooms, and strong links with technology companies ensure you graduate with genuine work-ready experience:

How your learning comes to life

  • Project-based coursework in programming, algorithms, and software design, where you solve real computing problems in teams.
