Modern products such as motor vehicles1 mobile phones or medical devices are based on the complex interaction of highly integrated hardware and specialized software. The use of software also plays a major role in the development of traffic control systems or drinking water supply networks. Complex processes are analyzed and modeled with an engineer's eye1 simulated with the computer and ultimately optimally designed. The early integration of software competence in the development process of new products and systems is a decisive criterion for success today.
