German studies at the University of Jena are represented by the Institute for German Linguistics and the Institute for German Literature Studies, which are closely linked. Here, the German language and its literature are researched and taught in all their breadth: in literature from medieval heroic epic to contemporary prose and in linguistics from the level of sound through word formation and grammar to text analysis. You will receive an overview of the scientific branches of German studies synchronous and diachronic German linguistics, newer German literature and older German literature (medieval studies) and will be made familiar with methods of scientific work. You become more linguistic for processes, in particular, you will be sensitized to cultural and aesthetic communication and you will find ways to analyze it, critically reflect and actively shape it
