Bachelor program in Communication Studies

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Duisburg Essen

Program Overview

The Communication Studies Bachelor program equips you with a comprehensive foundation in how communication shapes society, media, and human interaction. Whether you're interested in analyzing media systems, understanding organizational communication, or exploring the role of technology in how we connect, this program offers the flexibility to tailor your studies to your professional goals.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

You'll begin with essential foundations in communication science, establishing the theoretical backbone for everything that follows. The program opens with Grundlagen Kommunikationswissenschaft (Fundamentals of Communication Science), where you'll explore core concepts and frameworks that explain communication phenomena across different contexts. Alongside this, you'll develop critical research skills through Methoden empirischer Kommunikationsforschung (Methods of Empirical Communication Research), learning how to design studies and analyze data—practical tools you'll use throughout your career.

Second and Third Year

As you progress, the curriculum becomes more thematically focused, allowing you to dive deeper into specific communication domains. You'll engage with Kommunikation – Interaktion – Sprache (Communication, Interaction, Language) and Kommunikation – Medien – Technologie (Communication, Media, Technology), which explore how people communicate interpersonally and how technology reshapes these processes. These modules connect theory to real-world applications, examining everything from face-to-face dialogue to digital platforms. In the later stages, you'll take Kommunikation – Wissen – Handeln (Communication, Knowledge, Action) and Kommunikation – Institution – Gesellschaft (Communication, Institution, Society), examining how organizations and institutions use communication to function and influence.

Program Structure

The program runs for 6 semesters (3 years) in full-time format, with the option to study part-time over 10 semesters if you need flexibility. Classes are held on the Essen campus, and admission is admission-free—meaning there are no competitive entrance barriers.

What Makes This Program Stand Out

After completing your bachelor's degree, you'll have access to a spectrum of master's programs, including the 2-Fach-Master in Communication Science or the Literature and Practical Media Studies (LuM) Master, which combines academic rigor with practical industry experience. The Faculty of Humanities, which houses this program, is one of the largest at the university with around 8,000 students across its programs, giving you a vibrant academic community.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the Bachelor's program in Communication Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen, you'll dive into hands-on experiential learning right from the start, building practical skills through real-world projects that blend communication theory with cutting-edge digital tools and teamwork. Students collaborate on designing and implementing innovative applications, like augmented reality (AR) learning scenarios in educational contexts, with technical support from the university's Center for Information and Media Services (ZIM)—giving you direct experience in media production and evaluation. You'll also work with open-source platforms and analytics tools in group-based labs, fostering skills in interactive data exploration that's perfect for communication roles.

Here's how our facilities and opportunities make experiential learning come alive for Communication Studies students:
- Group projects in AR and media design: Develop and test AR learning apps in master's-level seminars (open to advanced undergrads via electives), implementing them with ZIM's expertise for practical media communication skills.
- Interactive data labs with specific software: Join the IDEA Lab for projects using OpenLAP (for learning analytics) and CourseMapper (UDE's MOOC platform with annotations, recommendations, and visualization tools)—hands-on HCI, ML, and info viz in small teams.
- E-Competence Agency resources: Access Moodle (open-source LMS), online tutorials, best-practice examples, and "learning by doing" coaching for eLearning and digital communication projects.
- Media psychology and communication research institutes: Engage with the Social Psychology: Media and Communication team for experimental projects on disinformation, credibility, and prebunking—ideal for group studies in digital messaging.
- Junior Research Group “Digital Citizenship in Network Technologies”: Collaborate on interdisciplinary work combining communication studies with computer science methods for network tech projects.
- Virtual leadership and communication training: Participate in NELS program with modules on inclusive communication, digital transformation, and networking in small facilitated groups—earn micro-credentials.
