Law and Public Administration LL.B.

NA On Campus Bachelors Program

Berlin School of Economics and Law Schoneberg Campus

Program Overview

The Law (Ius) LL.B. at HWR Berlin is a practical and career-focused law degree for students who want to understand how legal systems work and apply that knowledge in real professional settings. It is especially suitable for students interested in legal careers outside the traditional German State Examination route, with learning that connects law, administration, economics, politics, and society.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students develop a strong legal foundation by studying key areas such as Civil Law, Constitutional Law, and Criminal Law. This year helps students learn how to read legal situations, understand legal principles, and begin thinking like a law graduate in a structured and confident way.

Year 2:
In the second year, the programme becomes more applied, with students exploring areas such as Commercial and Corporate Law, European Law, and process regulations. A major advantage is the six-month work placement in the fourth semester, where students can experience how legal knowledge is used in real organisations, public bodies, or administrative settings.

Year 3:
In the final year, students strengthen their legal reasoning, communication, and professional judgement while preparing for future roles in legal, administrative, and organisational environments. The programme ends with a Bachelor’s thesis and oral examination, giving students the chance to show independent research skills and present legal arguments clearly.

Focus areas:
Civil Law, Commercial and Corporate Law, Constitutional Law, European Law, Criminal Law, Administrative Law, legal analysis, public administration, process regulations, communication skills, and professional legal practice.

Learning outcomes:
Students graduate with the ability to analyse legal issues, understand core areas of German and European law, communicate legal ideas clearly, and apply legal knowledge in public, private, and international organisational settings.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The programme carries the seal of the Accreditation Council, showing that it has gone through formal quality assurance within the German higher education system.

Reputation (employability rankings):
HWR Berlin highlights that graduates are prepared for careers in public administration, project management, mediation, management functions, and national or international institutions. The built-in six-month work placement also makes the programme especially useful for students who want practical exposure before graduating.

Important note:
HWR Berlin states that Law (Ius) LL.B. has been replaced by Law and Public Administration LL.B., and admissions from winter semester 2022/23 are made only to the new degree programme.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in Business Law stands out for its strong focus on experiential learning, where you'll build real-world legal skills through hands-on practice right from the start. The program includes dedicated case work and projects that let you apply business law concepts—like contract design, competition law, and international transactions—to realistic scenarios, all while the sixth semester is fully reserved for a compulsory internship, which you can even do abroad for global exposure. This setup, housed in the Department of Business and Economics, ensures you're not just studying theory but actively using it in professional settings.

Here's how the program delivers practical training through specific elements::
- Compulsory Internship: A full semester (sixth) dedicated to hands-on work experience in legal or business environments, including options abroad to gain international perspective.
- Case Work: Integrated from Part One, where you tackle real legal cases in business contexts like private business law, public business law, and economic offenses.
- Projects: Featured in Part Two's core modules, such as the Strategic Management Project, building teamwork and problem-solving in areas like company law and labor law.
- Key Qualifications Workshops: Practical sessions in negotiation, mediation, communication in professional contexts, and foreign languages to sharpen your interpersonal legal skills.
- University Computer Labs and PC Terminals: Free access for all students, including printing and internet, ideal for legal research and case simulations.
- Library Computer Facilities and Campus WiFi: Open access to support in-depth legal document analysis and collaborative work.

Progression & Future Opportunities

At the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), our Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programs emphasize experiential learning through built-in work placements that give you real-world legal experience right in the heart of Berlin's dynamic professional scene. Whether you're pursuing the general Law (Ius) LL.B. (6 semesters, Department of Public Administration), Company Law LL.B. (7 semesters, Department of Legal Studies), or Law and Public Administration LL.B. (7 semesters, Department of Public Administration), you'll dive into practical training alongside core legal studies in economics, administration, and more. These placements—ranging from 3 to 6 months—let you apply classroom knowledge in actual workplaces, often in private, public, or international settings, building skills employers value and boosting your resume before graduation.

Here's how our programs make experiential learning hands-on and career-focused:
- Mandatory internships/placements: A 6-month placement in the 4th semester for Law (Ius) LL.B., or 3-month internships in the 5th and 7th semesters for Company Law LL.B. (can be abroad); Law and Public Administration includes two compulsory placements in the 4th and 6th semesters (or express 6-semester option).
- Modular structure with practical modules: 29 modules in Company Law blend legal and business admin foundations, leading to specialized practice; all programs integrate economics, political science, and social sciences for versatile real-world application.
- Work placement recognition: Extra credits from placements count toward your degree, like in Business Law in an International Context pathways.
