Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Science)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Galway

Program Overview

The BSc in Agricultural Science at the University of Galway is designed for students who are interested in science, sustainability, and how modern food systems are developed and managed. It combines biological science, environmental understanding, and agribusiness knowledge to prepare students for careers in the global agricultural and food sector.

This programme suits students who enjoy practical learning, fieldwork, and solving real-world challenges related to farming, food production, and environmental sustainability.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students are introduced to the core foundations of agricultural science through modules such as Soil Science, Animal and Crop Production Systems, and Introduction to Agricultural Science. You will also develop basic laboratory skills and learn how different farming systems operate in Ireland and internationally. This year is focused on building strong scientific understanding alongside practical awareness of agriculture.

Year 2

In the second year, the programme becomes more focused with modules such as Animal Science and Production, Crop Science, and Agricultural Economics and Farm Business Management. Students start linking scientific knowledge with real farming decisions, including productivity, sustainability, and economic planning. Practical learning and applied case studies become more important at this stage.

Year 3

In the third year, students study more advanced topics including Agricultural Systems and Sustainability, Environmental Soil Management, and Livestock Production Science. The emphasis shifts toward applying knowledge in real-world agricultural contexts, supported by industry-relevant learning and research-informed teaching. Students also strengthen their analytical and problem-solving skills.

Year 4

In the final year, students complete advanced modules such as Agricultural Research Project, Farm Management Systems, and Sustainable Agrifood Innovation. A major independent research project is completed, allowing students to apply their learning to a real agricultural problem. This year prepares graduates for professional roles or further academic study.

Focus Areas

Sustainable agriculture, animal and crop production systems, agribusiness management, environmental soil and land use, food systems and innovation, agricultural research and technology application.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to evaluate and manage agricultural systems, apply scientific and technical knowledge to farming and food production, assess sustainability challenges, and use modern agricultural practices to improve efficiency and environmental performance.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme is designed in line with industry expectations in the Irish agrifood sector and is supported by strong connections with agricultural organisations and practical training opportunities, helping students prepare for professional careers in agriculture and related fields.

The University of Galway is internationally recognised and consistently ranked among the leading universities globally in the QS World University Rankings. It has a strong reputation for research, sustainability, and graduate employability across science and agriculture-related industries.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students on the BSc in Agricultural Science at the University of Galway develop strong practical skills by learning directly through fieldwork, laboratory training, and real industry experience. The programme is designed so that you are not only studying agriculture in theory but also working with real farming systems, research environments, and modern agrifood practices throughout your degree. This hands-on approach helps you build confidence in applying scientific knowledge to real agricultural challenges.

A key part of your learning comes from structured practical exposure, including placements, field visits, and access to specialist facilities:

  • Farm placements and industry experience through a 12-week work placement, where students gain real exposure to day-to-day farm operations and agricultural business practices

  • Field trips and demonstrations at major agricultural research and training centres such as Teagasc sites in Athenry, Grange, Moorpark, and Oak Park, covering both crop and livestock systems

  • Laboratory training in areas such as soil science, animal science, crop analysis, and environmental testing, using modern scientific equipment and methods

  • Digital agriculture tools, including GIS systems and data-based farm management technologies used for sustainability tracking and agricultural planning

  • Research-led learning, where students engage with active projects connected to agriculture, sustainability, and the bioeconomy

  • Final-year research project, allowing students to investigate a real agricultural issue using scientific methods and independent analysis

  • Group-based projects, where students work together on topics like farm planning, sustainability strategies, and agribusiness decision-making
