Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year focuses on building a rock-solid foundation in the core sciences required to understand the modern food chain. You will dive into fundamental modules like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, while gaining an early edge with introductory courses such as Agricultural Economics and Business.
Year 2
In the second year, the focus shifts toward the application of science and the introduction of critical business tools. You will explore the technical side of production through Principles of Animal Health, Behaviour and Welfare and Principles of Crop Science, while developing analytical expertise in Applied Biostatistics.
Year 3
This year is designed to turn your classroom knowledge into professional capability through a massive 30-week Professional Work Experience placement. Before heading into industry, you’ll sharpen your technical toolkit with modules in Financial Planning and Spreadsheet Modelling to prepare for real-world agribusiness challenges.
Year 4
Your final year is all about specialization and high-level strategy to prepare you for leadership roles. You will tackle complex subjects like Farm Business Management, Food Marketing, and Agri-Environmental Policy, while completing a significant Food and Agribusiness Research Project on a topic of your choice.

In the BAgrSc Hons Food and Agribusiness Management, we don’t just talk about the industry; we immerse you in it. You will move beyond the lecture hall to gain practical, hands-on skills through a mix of high-tech laboratory work, field-based data collection, and deep-dive industry projects. Professional Work Experience (PWE): A definitive highlight of the program is the mandatory 28-week internship in Year 3. You will work within major agri-food organizations in Ireland or abroad, gaining "on-the-job" experience in sectors like financial services, food processing, or marketing.
UCD Lyons Farm: You will have access to this 250-hectare research and teaching farm, which features state-of-the-art dairy, beef, sheep, and crop facilities. It includes the AgTechUCD Innovation Centre, a first-of-its-kind on-farm hub where you can see real-world testing of disruptive agricultural technologies.
Specialized Software & Digital Tools: You will master essential industry technology, including Spreadsheet Modelling for financial planning and Applied Biostatistics software for data analysis. You will also engage with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and cloud-based data management systems used for precision farming.
Food and Agribusiness Research Project: In your final year, you will lead an independent research project. This involves using computer-aided labs to conduct quantitative and qualitative studies, effectively becoming a consultant for the agri-food sector.
