Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) in Architecture

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Atlantic Technological University Sligo

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) in Architecture at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo is a five-year honours degree that combines creative design, technical knowledge, and critical thinking to prepare students for professional architectural practice. This program is well suited to creative and analytical students who want to design meaningful buildings and environments while responding to social, cultural, and environmental challenges.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Architectural Foundations
In the first year, students develop core design and communication skills through Architectural Design Studio 1, Architectural Drawing and Communication 1, and Visual Literacy. Alongside studio work, modules such as Architecture Technologies and Environment 1 and Theory and Design of Structures 1 introduce basic construction principles, environmental awareness, and structural understanding that support early design thinking.

Year 2 – Context, Theory, and Collaboration
Year 2 expands architectural awareness through Architectural Design Studio 2, YAADA Creative Interdisciplinary Practice 1, and Architecture Context and Theory 2. Students explore how architecture responds to cultural, historical, and social contexts while working on more complex design projects that encourage collaboration and critical reflection.

Year 3 – Technical Integration and Professional Skills
In the third year, students advance their design abilities in Architectural Design Studio 3 while strengthening technical and professional knowledge through Architecture Technologies and Environment 3 and Professional Studies 1 with BIM. This year focuses on integrating design creativity with sustainability, building systems, and industry-relevant digital tools.

Year 4 – Advanced Design and Research
Year 4 challenges students to engage with complex architectural problems through Architecture Design Studio 4 and Advanced Architecture Technology. Research and Engagement modules, along with dissertation development, allow students to combine academic research with design thinking and prepare for advanced professional or academic pathways.

Year 5 – Thesis and Preparation for Practice
The final year centres on Architectural Design Studio 5: Proposition and Thesis, where students complete a comprehensive design thesis supported by Professional Studies 3: Preparing for Practice. Students refine their portfolios, deepen their technical documentation skills, and gain a clear understanding of professional responsibilities and architectural practice.

Teaching closely reflects architectural practice, with regular critiques, collaborative projects, and exposure to real design processes, while the university’s strong studio culture and specialist facilities support hands-on exploration throughout the five-year programme:

  • Dedicated architecture design studios for each year group, providing space for project work, model display, peer learning, and tutor critique

  • Model-making workshops and fabrication facilities, including tools for physical modelling, laser cutting, and 3D printing to support design development

  • Large-format printing and plotting facilities used for producing professional architectural drawings, presentation boards, and portfolios

  • Integrated use of digital design and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software within architectural design, drawing, and professional studies modules

  • Group-based design projects that encourage collaboration, discussion, and teamwork similar to professional architectural practice

  • Interdisciplinary learning opportunities with students from other creative and built-environment disciplines through shared projects and studio initiatives

  • Educational field trips to significant architectural sites and European cities, allowing students to study buildings, urban environments, and cultural contexts first-hand

  • Access to the ATU library and digital learning resources, supporting architectural research, theory, and technical studies throughout the programme
