Program Overview

The Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) at South East Technological University (SETU) in Waterford is a five-year professionally accredited honours degree that trains creative thinkers to design inspiring, sustainable, and socially meaningful built environments. Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, you’ll build foundational design skills through Architectural Design Studio 1 and 2, learning how to think visually and conceptually about space. You will also study Cultural Context, Structures and Environmental Science, Techne Studio, and Visual Communication, giving you a strong introduction to the cultural, technical, and communication skills every architect needs.

Year 2

Year two deepens your design thinking and technical understanding with Architectural Design Studio 3 and 4, alongside continued work in Cultural Context and Structures and Environmental Science. You’ll also explore further Techne Studio and Visual Communication, and can choose electives such as Detailing by Model Making to expand your hands-on toolset.

Year 3

In year three, you begin engaging with professional practice through electives like Professional Practice 1 – Management or Industrial Placement, while Architectural Design Studio 5 challenges you with more complex design projects. Supporting modules in Cultural Context, Techne Studio, and Research and Academic Development strengthen your critical thinking and research skills as you refine your architectural voice.

Year 4

Year four elevates your design capability with Architectural Design Studio 7 and 8 and introduces modules in Conservation and advanced Cultural Context, deepening your understanding of heritage, context, and environmental research. Techne Studio 6 and 7 continues to develop your technical fluency in architectural making and construction principles.

Year 5

In the final year, your focus shifts to professional readiness with Advanced Architectural Design Studios 9 and 10, Professional Practice 2 and 3 exploring law and practice application, and in-depth Research and Academic Development. You’ll graduate ready to contribute to architectural practice and pursue registration pathways.
