Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architectural Technology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

South East Technological University

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology at South East Technological University is a practical, design-focused degree that blends creativity with technical expertise in how buildings are designed, detailed, and constructed. It suits students who enjoy working with building design, digital modelling, and problem-solving, and who want a career shaping sustainable, well-designed built environments.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students develop a solid foundation in architectural technology and digital design skills. Core modules such as Architectural & BIM Studio and Architectural Communication & BIM introduce design thinking, drawing, and modelling techniques used in professional practice. Subjects like Construction Technology and Structures & Environment help students understand materials, building systems, and how structures respond to environmental conditions.

Year 2:
The second year builds on these fundamentals with more complex design and technical challenges. Students continue developing their studio work through Architectural & BIM Studio and advance their digital and visual skills in Architectural Communication & BIM. Modules including Construction Technology, Structures & Environment, Understanding Architectural Design, and Publications 2 strengthen technical knowledge, design integration, and professional presentation skills.

Year 3:
In the final year, the focus shifts toward professional readiness and specialisation. Students study Professional Practice & Law and Research Methods, gaining insight into the legal, managerial, and research aspects of the profession. Advanced learning continues through Architectural & BIM Studio, Construction Technology, and Building Energy Software, with optional modules such as Conservation, Acoustics in the Built Environment, or Project Management allowing students to tailor their studies to career interests.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At SETU’s Architectural Technology programme, learning is hands-on from the very beginning. The course is studio-based, so you’ll spend much of your time working on real design projects in dedicated studio spaces, sketching, modelling, and using industry-standard digital tools alongside your classmates and tutors. You’ll gain practical experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) software such as Autodesk Revit, preparing you for the exact tools used in professional practice. Learning is project-focused and collaborative, allowing you to develop teamwork skills, solve real design problems, and present your work confidently. Throughout the degree, students also have the opportunity to participate in international study trips and a substantial work placement that connects them with real architectural workplaces.

Here’s how practical learning is integrated into the programme:

  • Dedicated studio spaces each year where students work closely with tutors on live design and technical projects, fostering teamwork and real-world design thinking.

  • Use of industry-standard software, with a strong focus on Building Information Modelling (BIM), including Autodesk Revit, incorporated into design and documentation work.

  • A 30-credit work placement in Year 3 that places students in a professional setting to apply skills on real projects and gain workplace experience.

  • Field-study design projects, including international visits to cities such as Bilbao, Barcelona, and Milan, helping students experience design and construction in global contexts.

  • Group projects and peer learning are central to studio work, encouraging collaborative problem-solving similar to professional design team environments.

  • Participation in industry showcases and events, where students present their work to professionals and peers, building communication and presentation skills.

SETU provides a range of facilities to support practical and creative learning, including studios, laboratories, and campus resources designed specifically for architectural and technical education.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology have a range of exciting career options where they can apply both design and technical building expertise. Many go on to work as Architectural Technologists, BIM Coordinators, Technical Designers, or Construction Consultants, contributing to the creation of sustainable, well-designed buildings and environments. With practical experience and industry-aligned skills, you will be well prepared to start your professional journey or continue your studies:

Here’s how SETU supports your progress after graduation:

  • Career support services at the SETU Careers Development Centre help you prepare CVs, practice interviews, attend employer events, and connect with companies seeking graduates in the built environment and architecture fields.

  • Work placement experience embedded in the programme gives you real industry experience and professional contacts before you graduate, making you more competitive in the job market.

  • University–industry engagement includes career events and networking opportunities with construction, design, and consultancy organisations that connect students directly with potential employers.

  • Accreditation value from the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and recognition from the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) supports your professional credibility and long-term career development.

  • Graduation outcomes show that most students move into employment or further study shortly after finishing the degree, thanks to strong career support and industry links.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this degree, you can continue your academic journey by pursuing a related honours degree or a specialised master’s programme in areas such as project management, sustainable design, conservation, or BIM management. You may also seek advanced entry into architecture programmes or engage in research-focused postgraduate study if you are interested in exploring technical or environmental aspects of the built environment in more depth.
