Curriculum Structure
Year 1:
In your first year, you’ll build a solid foundation in both the art and theory of image-making. Modules like Introduction to Photographic Theory, Photography + Culture, and Photography + Visual Communication introduce you to how images communicate and influence culture. You’ll also gain hands-on experience through Understanding the Photographic Image, Introduction to the Photographic Studio, and Narrative + The Moving Image, developing both technical skills and conceptual thinking.
Year 2:
In your second year, you’ll deepen your technical skills and contextual awareness. Society, Culture + The Image and Light, Lighting + Digital Media help you master advanced imaging techniques, while Documentary + The Moving Image introduces you to moving image practices. Discipline Specific Histories + Theories and Exhibition + The Photobook support creative thinking and visual storytelling, and an elective allows you to tailor part of your studies to your interests.
Year 3:
Your third year focuses on integrating practice with professional contexts. Photography + Installation Practice and Photography + Curatorial Practice guide larger, self-directed creative projects, while Photography, Identity + Ireland explores critical and cultural themes. You’ll also study Business + Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice and Professional Practice, preparing you to confidently navigate the creative industry.
Year 4:
In the final year, you will focus on independent, ambitious work through a Minor Project and a Major Project with Thesis. This is your chance to produce a substantial body of creative work that showcases everything you’ve learned and builds a professional portfolio.
Focus areas: Contemporary lens-based media, documentary practice, experimental film, digital imaging, visual storytelling.
