4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is all about the "creative re-use" of space, teaching you how to transform existing buildings into sustainable, functional, and breathtaking environments. It is perfect for students who are curious about the psychology of space and want to master the architectural technicalities required to work on everything from luxury retail to heritage conservation.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 Your first year is a vibrant introduction to the world of spatial design where you’ll build your fundamental toolkit through modules like Visual Literacy and Design Studio I. You will explore the relationship between human scale and ergonomics while learning the ropes of Construction and Architectural Technology to understand how buildings actually stand up.
Year 2 In the second year, you’ll start tackling more complex design challenges, moving from small-scale domestic projects to larger public environments. You’ll dive deep into Architecture Technologies and Environment, while honing your digital skills in Digital Design Representation, where you’ll start mastering industry-standard CAD and 3D modeling tools.
Year 3 The third year pushes your professional boundaries as you work on real-world "live" projects and interactive design briefs that focus on Interior Architectural Context and Theory. You’ll explore the Psychology and Cognitive components of space and have the opportunity for a professional work placement to see how a high-end design firm operates day-to-day.
Year 4 Your final year is the ultimate creative launchpad, centered around a year-long Thesis Design Project of your choice where you consolidate all your technical and artistic skills. You’ll also complete modules in Professional Studies for Interior Architects and Research for Design and the Arts, ensuring you graduate with a portfolio that is ready to impress the world’s top architectural firms.

At ATU Sligo, we believe that the best way to learn architecture is to get your hands dirty and your mind moving in a professional studio environment. You won't just be sitting in lecture halls; from day one, you’ll be part of a vibrant, creative community where the studio is your second home. Whether you are building physical scale models in our workshops or creating hyper-realistic virtual tours in the digital labs, you are gaining the exact same skills that top architectural firms are looking for right now.
Experiential Learning
Our program is built on the philosophy of "Creative Re-use," and we provide you with a high-spec environment to test your most ambitious ideas:
Dedicated Individual Studio Space: Unlike many programs where you share a "hot desk," every student here is provided with their own dedicated studio space accessible throughout the week, fostering a true professional design culture.
Industry-Leading Software Mastery: You will become a power-user of the tools that drive the industry, specifically AutoCAD for precise technical drafting, SketchUp for 3D conceptual modeling, and Revit for high-level Building Information Modelling (BIM).
Creative Hub for Arts & Design: You’ll have full access to our brand-new, state-of-the-art Creative Hub, which includes dedicated Apple Mac computer labs and specialized printing and plotting services for professional-grade design portfolios.
Professional Work Placements: In Year 3, you have the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the industry with an optional work placement, or even spend a semester studying abroad through the Erasmus+ program.
The Yeats Library: A world-class facility with over 700 workspaces and a massive collection of architectural journals and digital e-books, perfect for the deep research required for your final-year design thesis.
Hands-on Workshops: You aren't limited to digital work; you’ll have access to fully equipped carpentry and model-making workshops to bring your spatial concepts to life in 3D.
Real-World Client Projects: We regularly collaborate with local community groups and real clients, giving you the chance to solve authentic design problems that have a tangible impact on the Sligo region.
International Field Trips: Every year, our students embark on field trips to major European cities to study landmark architecture and interior heritage first-hand, bridging the gap between theory and global reality.
Collaborative Design "Live" Projects: You’ll participate in cross-disciplinary projects within the Yeats Academy, working alongside students from Fine Art or Creative Design to simulate the multidisciplinary teams found in modern architectural practices.
