This degree is a deep dive into the structural and aesthetic transformation of buildings, focusing heavily on adaptive re-use and the technical science of interior spaces. It’s the perfect fit for students who want a professional edge in both residential and commercial sectors, blending high-level CAD mastery with hands-on studio creativity.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 Your first year is an immersive introduction to the core language of design and the technical foundations of the industry. You’ll spend significant time in the studio mastering Architectural Drafting and Design Graphics, while exploring the human element of space through Ergonomics and Anthropometrics and the History of Interior Design.
Year 2 In the second year, the focus shifts toward professional technicality and more complex spatial challenges. You’ll dive deep into Building Regulations and Materials and Finishes, while advancing your digital toolkit with Computer Aided Design (CAD) to produce industry-standard technical drawings and 3D models.
Year 3 Your final year is where you consolidate your expertise into a major Degree Project, taking a concept from initial research right through to detailed documentation and presentation. You’ll also master the business side of the industry through Project Management and Design Technology, ensuring you’re ready to manage budgets, risks, and construction sites as soon as you graduate.
Focus areas (in a string): Adaptive re-use, sustainable interior design, spatial planning, Building Information Modelling (BIM), project management, technical detailing, and architectural lighting.
Learning outcomes (in a string): Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD 3D, ability to manage complex design briefs from concept to completion, deep knowledge of fire safety and building regulations, and advanced skills in 3D visualization and model making.
Professional alignment (accreditation): This program is fully validated by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and is recognized by the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) and the European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA).
At Griffith College Dublin, we don’t just teach you about design; we immerse you in it. From the moment you step onto our historic seven-acre campus on South Circular Road, you are treated as a designer-in-training. You’ll have your own dedicated workspace in our light-filled studios, where the transition from a hand-drawn sketch to a high-end digital render happens in real-time. This program is built around the "studio culture" of professional architectural firms, ensuring that your learning is active, social, and deeply practical.
Experiential Learning
Our approach ensures you graduate with a portfolio that speaks volumes, backed by hands-on experience with the latest industry technologies and real-world project briefs:
Dedicated Design Studios: You will work in bespoke, professional-grade studios where small class sizes mean you get one-on-one mentorship from practicing architects and designers.
Mastery of Industry Software: You will gain expert proficiency in the full suite of professional tools, including Revit (for BIM), AutoCAD (for technical drafting), SketchUp, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), and advanced rendering software like Twinmotion and Enscape.
"Live" Community Projects: Our students recently collaborated with the Deansrath Family Centre, designing the interior architecture for a new 500sqm facility—giving them the chance to solve real-world spatial problems for a real client.
LIFESIZE Plans Experience: As part of our commitment to spatial awareness, students visit LIFESIZE Plans Leinster, where they can walk through their own floor plans at a 1:1 scale before a single brick is laid.
Industry Field Trips: Learning extends to the streets of Dublin and beyond; students regularly visit leaders like SIG Workplace and Kube Interiors to explore cutting-edge materials, ergonomic furniture, and sustainable design trends.
Griffith Creative Week: Your journey culminates in a professional exhibition of your work during Griffith Creative Week, where industry scouts and the public are invited to view the next generation of design talent.
Modern CAD & iMac Labs: You’ll have access to 14 high-spec computer labs equipped with the latest hardware to handle complex 3D rendering and architectural modeling.
Traditional Model Making: Beyond the screen, our workshops allow you to build physical scale models, helping you understand the tactile reality of materials and structural form.
Professional Networking: We host regular guest lectures and talks, such as recent sessions on Universal Design with the National Disability Authority, keeping you connected to the latest policy and ethical standards in the industry.
