Bachelor of Technology (Education) in Graphics, Engineering and Technology concurrent with Teacher Education

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Limerick

Program Overview

This degree is ideal if you enjoy designing, building, problem-solving, and explaining how things work, and you can see yourself teaching those skills to others. The programme uniquely combines engineering, graphics, and technology with professional teacher education, so you graduate as a fully qualified post-primary teacher with strong technical expertise. Over four years, you’ll develop confidence both as a technologist and as an educator, ready to step straight into Irish secondary schools.

This course suits practical, creative students who like working with their hands and minds, and who want a stable, meaningful teaching career with strong long-term prospects.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Foundations in Technology and Teaching

In your first year, you build a strong technical base while being introduced to education as a profession. You’ll study areas such as graphics, materials, manufacturing processes, electronics, and technological mathematics, alongside introductory education modules that explore how students learn and how schools operate. This year helps you develop both technical confidence and an understanding of what it means to be a teacher.

Year 2 – Skills Development and First School Experience

Second year deepens your technical skills in graphics, engineering, and technology while introducing you to structured teaching practice. You’ll begin preparing lessons, learning classroom management strategies, and understanding curriculum requirements. A supervised school placement allows you to experience real classrooms and begin applying what you’ve learned in a supportive environment.

Year 3 – Advanced Technology and Professional Growth

In third year, your studies become more advanced and specialised. You’ll explore areas such as automation, electronics, materials technology, and advanced design, while also developing your teaching skills through modules on assessment, inclusion, and professional practice. This year focuses on building confidence, independence, and professional judgement.

Year 4 – Teaching Practice and Final Preparation

Your final year is strongly practice-focused. You complete an extended teaching placement in a post-primary school, gradually taking responsibility for planning and delivering lessons. Alongside this, you work on a final-year project and advanced modules that help you reflect on your practice and prepare for life as a qualified teacher.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around learning by doing, ensuring you graduate with real experience, not just theory:

  • Early and extended school placements, including a major block placement in final year where you teach in real classrooms

  • Specialist workshops and laboratories for graphics, engineering, manufacturing, electronics, and design

  • Hands-on design and build projects that mirror real-world engineering and technology challenges

  • Problem-based learning that encourages creativity, innovation, and practical problem-solving

  • Use of modern digital tools and technical software relevant to graphics and technology education

  • Ongoing feedback and mentoring from experienced lecturers and teacher educators

  • Strong links with schools, ensuring placements reflect the realities of modern post-primary education.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this programme are highly employable because they qualify as specialist post-primary teachers in high-demand subjects:

  • Post-primary teacher of Engineering, Technology, Technical Graphics, or Design & Communication Graphics

  • Permanent teaching roles in secondary schools, ETBs, and community colleges across Ireland

  • Leadership opportunities over time, such as subject coordinator, year head, or curriculum leader

  • Curriculum development and educational advisory roles with experience

  • Further academic study in education, engineering, design, or technology at postgraduate level

Teaching offers a structured salary scale, strong job security, and long-term career progression. With experience, many graduates move into leadership, mentoring, or educational innovation roles within schools.

Further Academic Progression:

After graduation, you may choose to continue your studies through postgraduate programmes in education, educational leadership, curriculum design, or specialist areas of engineering and technology. These pathways allow you to deepen expertise, move into senior roles, or contribute to educational research and policy.
