The BEd in Early Childhood Education and Practice at South East Technological University (SETU) prepares you to become a confident, compassionate professional working with young children and families up to the age of eight. 📘 Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year gives you a strong grounding in child development, learning and the social context of early years. You’ll study modules like Critical Thinking and Academic Skills, Child Developmental Psychology 1, Children as Learners, Early Years Education: Methods and Practice, and Introduction to Research. This year also helps you reflect on your own professional development while understanding how children interact, play and learn in early settings.

Year 2

In Year 2, you build on theory with your first Practice Placement and deepen your understanding of key policies and developmental perspectives. Modules such as Irish Early Childhood Education Policies, Child Development Psychology 2, Introduction to Irish Law, and Early Childhood Assessment prepare you to apply knowledge in real settings while gaining valuable supervised professional experience.

Year 3

In your final year, you’ll integrate your learning through advanced practice and research. Modules include Direct Work with Children, Parents and Staff, Child Health and Wellbeing, Managing Early Years Contexts, Diversity and Inclusion in Early Childhood, and Social Research Methods. You’ll also complete a supervised placement and a research dissertation that allows you to explore an area of personal interest in depth.
