Program Overview

Exercise and Health Fitness Management at the University of Limerick is designed for students who love sport, fitness and wellbeing and want to turn that passion into a professional career. The course combines practical fitness training with health science and business skills, preparing you to work as a fitness professional, coach or health manager.


Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You start by learning the core skills of the fitness industry through modules such as Fitness Instruction, Resistance Training, Exercise to Music and Body Conditioning. From early on, you gain hands-on experience and professional certifications that allow you to work in gyms, studios and health clubs while still studying.

Year 2
In second year, you begin to specialise based on your interests. You study Advanced Personal Training and choose pathways such as Strength and Conditioning, Pilates and Corrective Exercise, Physical Activity for Chronic Conditions or fitness leadership, helping you work with athletes, clients with health needs or general populations.

Year 3
This year combines learning with real-world experience. You complete a co-operative work placement in the fitness, sport or health industry while also developing your professional and research skills, giving you practical experience that employers value.

Year 4
Your final year focuses on leadership and management. You study subjects such as Health Promotion, Event Management, Financial Management, Marketing and Human Resource Management, preparing you to run fitness businesses, lead teams or work in health promotion and wellness organisations.

    In third year, you complete a co-operative industry placement in gyms, sports organisations, health centres or wellness companies, gaining full-time professional experience.

    You help plan and deliver health and fitness events, classes and community activities, building leadership and organisational skills.
