B.Dent.Sc Hons Dental Science

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Trinity College Dublin TCD

Program Overview

The Dental Science (B.Dent.Sc) program at Trinity College Dublin is a five-year professional degree that prepares students to become fully qualified dentists through a combination of scientific learning and clinical training. It focuses on developing strong clinical judgment, practical dental skills, and the ability to deliver safe, patient-centred oral healthcare.

This program suits students who are detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and interested in healthcare, especially those who want a balance of science, hands-on clinical work, and direct patient interaction.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students focus on building a strong foundation in basic medical and dental sciences. They study areas such as Human Biology, Physical Sciences, Anatomy and Dental Anatomy, along with Personal and Professional Development, which helps them understand the human body while also introducing professional values and communication skills needed in dentistry.

Year 2

The second year introduces core dental concepts and early clinical exposure. Students study Basic Dental Care, Oral Biology and Introduction to Pathology, Dental Public Health, and continue with Human Biology, while also beginning to observe clinical settings and gradually develop essential practical skills.

Year 3

In the third year, students move into more direct clinical training. Modules such as Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Clinical Medical Sciences, and Comprehensive Patient Care help students start treating patients under supervision while developing diagnostic skills and treatment planning abilities.

Year 4

The fourth year focuses on advanced clinical dentistry and more complex patient care. Students study Advanced Restorative Dentistry, Child Dental Health, Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology, along with Dental Public Health, while gaining deeper experience in both restorative and surgical procedures.

Year 5

The final year prepares students for independent dental practice. Students refine their skills through Advanced Restorative Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Public and Child Dental Health, Evidence-Based Dentistry, and Comprehensive Patient Care, ensuring they are ready for real-world professional responsibilities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Dental Science program at Trinity College Dublin is strongly focused on learning through real clinical experience, so students don’t just stay in lecture rooms—they gradually move into hospital and clinic environments from the early stages of the degree. Training is centred at the Dublin Dental University Hospital, where students develop practical skills step by step, starting with observation and simulation before progressing to treating real patients under close supervision. This approach helps students build confidence, clinical judgement, and communication skills in a realistic professional setting.

As students advance through the program, they work more independently in clinical teams, managing patient care across different dental specialties while being supported by experienced clinicians. Alongside this, they also use simulation labs, digital tools, and research resources to strengthen their technical ability and evidence-based decision-making:

  • Clinical training is delivered at the Dublin Dental University Hospital, giving students direct hands-on experience with real patients under supervision

  • Early clinical exposure includes observing treatments, learning patient examination techniques, and practicing basic procedures in controlled settings

  • Simulation laboratories are used to practice essential dental skills before working in real clinical environments

  • Small-group, case-based learning sessions help students discuss real patient scenarios and develop clinical reasoning skills

  • Digital learning tools and clinical technologies are integrated into teaching and practice throughout the program

  • Students train in structured clinical teams, improving communication, teamwork, and patient management skills

  • Access to university libraries and dental research resources supports academic learning and evidence-based practice

  • Clinical rotations across different dental specialties, including restorative dentistry, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and child dental health

  • Final-year students take on comprehensive patient care cases that reflect real general dental practice

  • Opportunities to engage in dental research through the School of Dental Science and hospital-based research units
