BSc in in Bioanalytical Science

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Atlantic Technological University - Donegal Letterkenny Campus

Program Overview

The Bioanalytical Science degree at ATU is designed for students who love science and want to work in modern laboratories that support healthcare, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. It gives you the skills to analyse biological samples, understand complex data, and use advanced lab technology to solve real-world problems.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You start by building a strong foundation in science with modules such as Chemistry, Physics, Maths Skills for Science, Animal and Plant Biology and Laboratory Skills and Safety. This year introduces you to how scientific experiments are run, how data is collected, and how to work safely and confidently in a laboratory.

Year 2
In second year, you move deeper into the life sciences. You study Molecular Biology, Analytical Science, Biochemistry and Genetics, learning how cells work at a molecular level and how biological samples are tested and measured. Your lab work becomes more advanced as you begin analysing real data from experiments.

Final Year
In your final year, you work at an advanced level using modern bioanalytical techniques and complete a major research project. This project lets you design experiments, analyse real data and present professional scientific findings — just like you would in a working laboratory.

Focus areas

Bioanalysis, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, pharmaceutical testing, analytical chemistry, laboratory science.

Learning outcomes

Strong laboratory and analytical skills, ability to work with biological and chemical data, confidence in using modern scientific equipment, and the ability to communicate scientific results clearly and professionally.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This is a Level 8 honours bachelor’s degree on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications, giving you a qualification that is recognised in industry and for postgraduate study in Ireland and abroad.

Reputation (employability & recognition)

ATU science graduates are well regarded by biotechnology, pharmaceutical and laboratory employers for their practical skills and industry-ready training.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At ATU, Bioanalytical Science is taught through hands-on laboratory training and real scientific investigation, not just lectures. From your first year, you will work in modern teaching and research laboratories, learning how to handle biological samples, operate analytical instruments, and follow professional laboratory standards. As you move through the course, you progress from basic lab techniques to advanced bioanalytical testing, pharmaceutical analysis and research-grade experimentation, finishing with a final-year project that mirrors real industry and research work.

That practical learning happens through:

  • Dedicated bioanalytical and life-science laboratories
You carry out experiments in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and analytical chemistry labs, learning how to test, measure and analyse biological and chemical samples.

  • Use of professional laboratory instruments
You train with industry-standard equipment used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology labs, including spectrophotometers, chromatography systems, electrophoresis units and microbiological testing equipment.

  • Biopharmaceutical and protein analysis work
Through modules like Biopharmaceutical Processes and Protein Chemistry, you learn how medicines and biological products are analysed, purified and quality-checked in real drug-development environments.

  • Data analysis and scientific reporting
You don’t just run experiments — you learn how to process results, interpret data, write lab reports and present findings in a professional scientific format.

  • Final-year research project
In your final year, you complete an independent laboratory-based research project, working with academic staff to investigate a real bioanalytical or life-science problem using advanced techniques.

  • Team-based lab work
Many practical modules involve working in small groups, reflecting how scientists collaborate in real laboratories and helping you build communication and teamwork skills.

  • Access to scientific learning resources
You use ATU’s science libraries, digital journals and lab support services to support your practical work, research and report writing.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Honours) Bioanalytical Science at ATU step straight into industries where scientific testing, data and quality control are critical. With your training in laboratory techniques, molecular biology and pharmaceutical analysis, you’ll be ready for roles such as Bioanalytical Scientist, Quality Control Analyst, Laboratory Technician, or Biopharmaceutical Testing Specialist in biotechnology, pharma and research labs.

That means this degree opens doors to a wide range of high-demand careers:

  • Strong employability in life-science industries
Ireland is a major global hub for pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical manufacturing, and employers actively recruit graduates with hands-on analytical and laboratory skills.

  • Industry-ready laboratory training
You graduate with experience using professional analytical instruments, biological testing methods and quality-controlled lab procedures — the same skills used in regulated pharmaceutical and biotech environments.

  • Pathways into regulated and high-value roles
Bioanalytical graduates are needed in drug development, quality assurance, environmental testing, clinical laboratories and research facilities.

  • International recognition
Your Level 8 honours degree is recognised in Ireland, Europe and internationally, giving you flexibility to work or study abroad.

  • Where graduates go
Alumni work in pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical diagnostics, biotechnology companies, environmental labs, contract research organisations and government testing agencies.

Further Academic Progression

After completing this degree, you can move into postgraduate study in areas such as Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Science, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science or Bioinformatics. Many students also progress to Master’s and PhD research, leading to careers in advanced research, drug discovery, clinical science and university teaching.
