4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
Intellectual Disability Nursing at ATU is about supporting people with intellectual disabilities to live healthy, meaningful and inclusive lives. This programme is ideal if you’re compassionate, patient and motivated to work closely with individuals and families, providing skilled nursing care across community, residential and healthcare settings.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You begin by developing a strong foundation in nursing and health sciences. Modules such as Anatomy and Physiology, Nursing Practice Foundations and Human Growth and Development help you understand how the body works and how to provide safe, respectful and person-centred care. You are also introduced to the role of the intellectual disability nurse and professional communication.
Year 2
In second year, you deepen your understanding of health needs and nursing interventions. You study areas including Psychology and Sociology, Health Conditions and Disability, Pharmacology for Nursing and Professional Nursing Practice, learning how to assess health, support wellbeing and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Year 3
This year focuses on applying theory to real nursing practice. Through modules such as Specialist Intellectual Disability Nursing, Health Promotion and Complex Care and Communication, you develop skills to support individuals with varying levels of need. Clinical skills labs and supervised placements help build your confidence in real care environments.
Year 4
In your final year, you bring everything together through advanced nursing practice and extended clinical placements. You study Leadership and Professional Development and Integrated Nursing Practice, while spending significant time in intellectual disability services, preparing you for professional practice and registration as a nurse.

Supervised clinical placements every year
You complete placements in residential, community and specialist intellectual disability services, working directly with individuals and families under the guidance of experienced nurses.
Clinical skills and simulation labs
You practise essential nursing skills such as health assessment, medication administration, communication techniques and personal care in safe, simulated environments before applying them in practice.
Person-centred care practice
Placements focus on supporting individuals to achieve independence, wellbeing and inclusion, helping you understand the real impact of intellectual disability nursing on everyday life.
Multidisciplinary team experience
You work alongside psychologists, therapists, social workers and other healthcare professionals, learning how collaborative care supports better outcomes.
Health promotion and advocacy work
Through both placements and coursework, you take part in health education, advocacy and support planning for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Progressive responsibility
As you move through the programme, your role in clinical settings becomes more independent, helping you transition smoothly into professional nursing practice.
Extended final-year placements
In your final year, longer placements allow you to consolidate your skills, build confidence and prepare fully for registration as a professional nurse.
