Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) in General Nursing at Dundalk Institute of Technology prepares you to become a skilled, compassionate nurse who can confidently care for people in hospitals, clinics, and community settings. It’s designed for students who want a hands-on healthcare career where science, empathy, and practical experience come together to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

In your first year, you will build strong foundations in both nursing practice and health sciences. Through modules such as Foundations in General Nursing Practice, Natural Sciences for Nursing, Introduction to Psychology for General Nursing, and Community Nursing, you’ll learn how the body works, how people experience illness, and how nurses support recovery and wellbeing. You’ll also begin supervised clinical placements and skills-lab sessions to start developing confidence in real care environments.

Year Two

The second year takes your learning deeper into how the body responds to illness and treatment. You will study Applied Physiology and Introduction to Pharmacology along with modules like Neurological and Musculoskeletal Nursing Care, Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Nursing Care, and Older Person and Health. Alongside this, continued clinical placements help you apply what you learn while supporting patients with a wide range of health conditions.

Year Three

In third year, the focus moves toward complex care and professional responsibility. Through Palliative Care and End of Life Care, Quality, Risk and Safety in Healthcare, Integrated Care of Chronic Illness, and Ethical and Legal Practice in General Nursing, you will learn how to deliver safe, compassionate, and ethical care in challenging situations. Clinical placements allow you to take on more responsibility and work closely with healthcare teams.

Year Four

Your final year brings everything together as you prepare for life as a registered nurse. You will study Contemporary Nursing Practice, Nursing Management of the Acutely Ill Adult, and Preparation for Professional Practice while completing a 36-week paid internship in a healthcare setting. This extended placement helps you transition smoothly into professional practice, giving you the confidence and experience to start your nursing career straight after graduation.
