5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) and MPharm in Pharmacy at RCSI Dublin is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career as a patient-focused, clinically confident pharmacist. It suits students who are interested in science, healthcare and real-world impact, combining strong scientific foundations with early professional exposure and hands-on learning throughout the programme.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students develop a solid scientific foundation in pharmacy through subjects such as The Cellular Basis of Life, Fundamentals of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Fundamentals of Pharmacology and Immunology. Alongside core science, students are introduced to professionalism and pharmacy practice, supported by structured visits to community, hospital and industrial pharmacy settings.

Year 2:
Year 2 focuses on integrated, systems-based learning with modules including Cardiovascular Health, Respiratory Health and Medicines – Drug Life Cycle. Students build their understanding of how medicines are developed and used in patient care, while gaining practical experience through a supervised community pharmacy placement and optional study areas.

Year 3:
In the third year, learning advances into more complex therapeutic areas such as Liver and Kidney Health, Medicines – Advanced Therapies and Global and Public Health. Clinical and elective placements allow students to apply academic knowledge in real healthcare environments, strengthening clinical reasoning and patient-focused decision-making skills.

Year 4:
Year 4 is highly practice-focused and includes an extended professional placement in settings such as community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, industry or regulation. Academic learning continues through modules like Clinical Pharmacy, Mental Health, Evidence-Based Medicine and a supervised Research Skills project, leading to the award of the BSc in Pharmacy.

Year 5 (MPharm):
The final year prepares students for independent professional practice through advanced modules such as Patient Care and Society and Decision Making in Complex Care. An extended patient-facing placement and a Practice Improvement Project ensure graduates are fully prepared for the Professional Registration Examination and professional pharmacy practice.
