Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Junior Fresh

Year 2 – Senior Fresh

The second year deepens your understanding of drug properties and how medicines behave in clinical environments. You’ll engage with Formulation and Pharmaceutical Technology, Physical Pharmacy II and Drug Transport, and Molecular & Chemotherapeutic Pharmacology and Clinical Therapeutics to link science directly with treatment. Modules like Pharmaceutical Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and Blood, Cardiovascular & Renal Pharmacology, prepare you for advanced clinical decision-making.

Year 3 – Junior Sophister

In the third year, the focus shifts to specialty areas of pharmacology and advanced pharmaceutical technology. You’ll study Sterile Products and Advanced Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Natural Sources of Drugs and Substances used in Medicines, and tackle complex therapeutic topics including Endocrine & Reproductive Pharmacology and Neuropharmacology and Clinical Therapeutics. Practical skills and critical thinking are emphasized as you begin more independent professional development.

Year 4 – Senior Sophister

Year 4 blends classroom learning with in-depth professional practice and research. Core modules such as Professional Development and Communication — Service Development, Medicines Optimisation in Practice, and Developing Competency through Experiential Learning give you hands-on experience with real pharmacy settings. You’ll also complete a Senior Sophister Capstone Research Project and study Evidence Informing Practice, equipping you to think like a healthcare professional.

Year 5 – Master’s Year

Your final year leads to the award of the M.Pharm degree, essential for pharmacist registration in Ireland. You’ll take advanced modules such as Practice of Pharmacy and Integrated Pharmacy Skills, Supply of Medicines and Organisation and Management Skills, and Leading the Safe and Rational Use of Medicines. A major Pharmacy Practice Research Project and Experiential Learning & Professional Registration Examination ensure you’re fully ready for professional practice.
