4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BSc (Hons) Advanced Therapeutic Technologies at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland focuses on modern drug discovery, biopharmaceuticals, precision medicine, and health technologies across the full therapeutic lifecycle. It suits students interested in biomedical science, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, data-driven healthcare, and industry-linked careers.
Curriculum structure
First Year
Students build biomedical foundations through modules such as The Cellular Basis of Life, Fundamentals of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Fundamentals of Pharmacology and Immunology. These introduce cell biology, basic drug chemistry, and mechanisms of drug action alongside early laboratory and data skills.
Second Year
The second year develops therapeutic and analytical depth with Human Genetics and Genomics, Biologic & Immuno-therapeutics, and Medicines – Drug Life Cycle. Students also gain quantitative and regulatory insight through Biostatistics and Bioanalytics and Regulatory Science.
Third Year
Applied industry-focused learning dominates the third year with Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing (including NIBRT training), Advanced Genetics and Cell Biology, and Enterprise and Innovation, followed by an eight-month industry placement. This year strengthens practical bioprocessing and professional skills.
Fourth Year
In the final year, students study advanced and emerging areas such as Frontiers of Therapeutic Technologies, Computational Biology 2, and Connected Health, and complete a Research Project. The focus is on innovation, data-driven healthcare, and independent scientific research.
Focus areas (in a string):
Drug discovery, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, genomics, immuno-therapeutics, regulatory science, computational biology, precision and connected health.
Learning outcomes (in a string):
Apply biomedical and therapeutic science principles; analyse drug development processes; use data and computational tools; understand regulatory frameworks; conduct independent research.
Professional alignment (accreditation):
NFQ Level 8 honours degree awarded by RCSI/NUI, designed with strong pharmaceutical and health-technology industry input.
Reputation (employability rankings):
RCSI is internationally recognised for health sciences education, with strong industry links and graduate employability in Ireland’s global biopharma and medical technology sector.
The specific components of experiential learning in the program are:
Mandatory Clinical Placements: Students complete over 1,000 hours of clinical practice. Placements are in affiliated hospitals, primary care centers, and specialist units (e.g., Beaumont Hospital, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, pediatric and rehabilitation settings).
Designated Simulation Laboratories: Practical skills are developed in the UCD Health Sciences Centre, which houses dedicated physiotherapy labs with treatment beds, electrotherapy equipment, hydrotherapy pools, and gait analysis technology.
Specific Software & Digital Tools: Training includes the use of EMG (Electromyography) systems and gait analysis software (such as Vicon or similar motion capture systems) for biomechanical assessment.
Group Projects: A key component is the Interprofessional Capstone Project in the final year, where physiotherapy students collaborate with peers from other health disciplines (e.g., medicine, nursing) to address complex patient case studies.
Specialist Facilities & Institutes: Learning is supported by the UCD Institute for Sport and Health and access to the UCD Clinical Research Centre, where final-year students may engage in research projects.
Specific Libraries: The UCD Health Sciences Library in the Woodview Complex provides specialized collections, journals, and databases essential for physiotherapy evidence-based practice.
Graduates of RCSI's BSc Advanced Therapeutic Technologies gain expertise in biopharma manufacturing, precision medicine, genomics, and computational biology through hands-on lab training and an 8-month industry placement, preparing them as workplace-ready innovators for Ireland's biopharma sector. They develop skills in drug development lifecycle, AI applications, and regulatory science for cutting-edge therapeutic solutions. Typical job roles include biopharma process specialist, clinical trial analyst, quality assurance scientist, and data analytics researcher.
Progression & Future Opportunities: RCSI's industry-focused model ensures elite employability:
Careers Service coordinates 8-month paid placements (biopharma companies), NIBRT training, recruitment fairs, power skills workshops.
95%+ employed within 6 months; €35K–€48K starting (~AED 150K–200K) in pharma/biotech.
Partnerships with Takeda, multinational biopharma firms, NIBRT provide placements and direct hiring pipelines.
International accreditation guarantees global recognition for biopharma leadership roles.
Graduates lead R&D projects, clinical programs within 3-5 years.
Further Academic Progression: Graduates pursue RCSI MSc Biopharmaceuticals or PhD research in precision medicine; many advance to international doctorates at MIT or Cambridge leveraging industry experience for academia or C-suite biopharma roles.
