BSc Physiotherapy

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin is a four-year honours undergraduate degree that trains students to become competent physiotherapy professionals capable of assessing, treating, and rehabilitating movement-related conditions across the lifespan. Curriculum structure

First and Second Years:

In the first two years, the programme emphasizes building core scientific knowledge and introductory physiotherapy theory. Students study Physiology, Anatomy, Physics, Chemistry, Pathology, and Exercise Science, which provide a solid foundation in how the human body functions and responds to physical interventions. Early coursework also introduces common conditions encountered in clinical practice, including respiratory conditions and musculoskeletal disorders, and develops essential practical skills through laboratory and lecture-based practical classes.

Third Year:

In the third year, students begin to balance academic study with real-world clinical experience. This year typically involves half academic modules and half clinical placements in a variety of healthcare settings both within and outside the Dublin area. Academic learning includes applied physiotherapy topics, while clinical placements allow students to apply therapeutic techniques, clinical reasoning, and patient interaction skills under professional supervision.

Fourth Year:

The final year further strengthens professional and clinical competence through extended practical placements and advanced subjects such as Sports and Exercise Medicine, Ergonomics, Professional Issues in Physiotherapy, and Advances in Physiotherapy. In the second term, students undertake an investigative research project that enhances critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and scientific communication skills. Extensive clinical experience in the final year — typically consisting of two placements — ensures graduates are ready for independent practice.
