BSc Hons Physiotherapy

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at UCD is a four-year honours degree that equips students with the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies needed to assess, treat, and rehabilitate movement-related conditions across the lifespan. It suits students who are passionate about health, rehabilitation, anatomy and physiology, and who want to become registered physiotherapists working in clinical, hospital, community and sport settings.

Curriculum structure

First Year:

In the first year, students build core scientific foundations essential for physiotherapy practice, including Anatomy, Physiology, Physics and Psychology alongside introductory physiotherapy theory such as Introduction to Professional Physiotherapy Practice and Biomechanics. These modules develop an understanding of how the human body is structured and functions, and begin to introduce principles of movement, exercise, and professional practice. Hands-on classes in clinical skills laboratories help students transition from theory to basic practical application.

Second Year:

In the second year, the programme builds on foundational knowledge with deeper study of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Cardio-Respiratory Physiotherapy, Neurological Physiotherapy and more advanced Exercise Science modules. Students begin to integrate clinical reasoning skills with scientific understanding to assess and manage a range of movement and functional conditions. Continued practical classes develop therapeutic techniques, patient handling, and communication in clinical contexts.

Third Year:

During the third year, students expand clinical competencies with intermediate and advanced modules such as Intermediate Musculoskeletal, Advanced Neurological and Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, and Physiotherapy Professional Practice. Students also engage with evidence-based practice, research principles, and inter-professional learning. This year typically includes supervised clinical education placements where students apply their skills in real healthcare settings under professional supervision.

Fourth Year:

In the final year, the curriculum emphasizes advanced clinical practice, specialisation, and professional development, with modules in Clinical Specialities, Sports Physiotherapy, Clinical Exercise, and often a research or dissertation project. Students complete extensive practice education placements, which together exceed 1,000 hours of clinical experience across a variety of settings including acute hospitals, community health services, and rehabilitation centres. These placements are assessed using structured clinical assessment tools.
