4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is an elite training ground for the next generation of actuarial leaders, blending heavy-duty mathematics with deep financial theory and professional practice. It’s the perfect choice for students who want a direct route to becoming a qualified actuary, as it offers the maximum possible exemptions from the initial professional exams of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 Your first year focuses on building an unbreakable mathematical foundation and introducing you to the actuarial profession. You’ll dive into core modules like Linear Algebra with Applications, Advanced Calculus, and Financial Accounting, while getting your first taste of the industry through the Introduction to Actuarial & Financial Studies.
Year 2 In the second year, the focus shifts toward the application of probability and statistics to financial problems. You’ll master Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics, explore the science of risk in Introduction to Probability, and learn to manipulate complex datasets using Data Programming with R.
Year 3 This is a defining year where you move from theory to high-level professional practice. The first semester covers advanced topics like Stochastic Models and Survival Models, while the second semester is dedicated to an intensive, six-month Professional Work Placement at a top-tier financial or insurance firm.
Year 4 Your final year is about specialization and leadership-level technical expertise. You will tackle heavy-hitting subjects like Actuarial Risk Management, Financial Mathematics, and Statistical Machine Learning, ensuring you graduate with a portfolio of skills that are immediately applicable in any global financial hub.
Focus areas (in a string): Actuarial science, financial risk management, stochastic modeling, data analytics for finance, life insurance mathematics, pensions and social security, and investment strategy.
Learning outcomes (in a string): Mastery of advanced statistical modeling, expert proficiency in Excel and R, ability to design and price complex insurance products, and a deep understanding of the global financial regulatory landscape.
Professional alignment (accreditation): This program holds the highest level of accreditation from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), offering exemptions from Core Principles CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, and CB2.
Reputation (employability rankings): UCD is consistently ranked #1 in Ireland for Graduate Employability (QS World University Rankings) and is the primary source of talent for Ireland’s multi-billion euro international financial services sector.
At University College Dublin (UCD), the BAFS program isn't just about high-level math; it’s about applying that math to real-world financial architecture. From your first week in the O'Brien Centre for Science, you are treated as a professional analyst. You won’t just be studying formulas in a vacuum; you’ll be using the same computational tools and data modeling software used by the "Big Four" and major global insurers, ensuring that when you walk into your first job, you’re already a veteran of the industry’s standard platforms.
Experiential Learning
Our curriculum is built around the "Studio and Lab" model, where theoretical lectures are immediately followed by practical applications in high-spec computer laboratories:
Six-Month Professional Placement: The crown jewel of the BAFS program is the intensive work placement in Year 3. This is a dedicated, six-month immersion where you work full-time in a professional actuarial or financial role, gaining credit while earning a salary at companies like Allianz, Aon, Deloitte, Irish Life, Mercer, SIG, and Zurich.
Statistical Computing with R: You will gain expert-level proficiency in R, the primary programming language for modern actuarial data science, using it to build predictive models and perform complex survival analysis.
Advanced Data Modeling Tools: Beyond R, you will master Python and Advanced Excel for Actuaries, focusing on financial modeling, automated reporting, and large-scale data manipulation.
The O'Brien Centre for Science: You will have access to the most modern science facility in Ireland, featuring dedicated Active Learning Classrooms and high-spec computer labs designed for collaborative quantitative projects.
Professional Mentorship: During your placement, you are paired with a professional mentor in the field, bridging the gap between your academic studies and the ethical and professional standards of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).
Group Industry Projects: Many modules, such as Information Management for Actuaries, are built around group assignments that simulate real-world consulting briefs, requiring you to present your findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
UCD Science Library: You have access to one of the most comprehensive collections of actuarial and mathematical journals in Europe, along with dedicated quiet zones for the deep focus required for stochastic modeling.
Bloomberg Terminals: Through UCD’s financial facilities, you can gain exposure to real-time market data and financial analytics, providing the broader economic context needed for modern risk assessment.
Graduating from the BAFS (Hons) in Actuarial and Financial Studies at UCD places you in an elite bracket of professionals who are the "architects of financial security." Our graduates are famously work-ready, stepping into high-stakes roles where they use advanced mathematics to predict the future and protect global economies. You will leave Belfield not just with a world-class degree, but with a nearly completed professional qualification and a network that extends into the boardroom of every major financial institution in Ireland and beyond.
Progression & Future Opportunities
The career trajectory for BAFS graduates is exceptionally steep, moving quickly from technical analysis to strategic leadership in global markets. Typical job roles include: Actuarial Analyst (Life, Pensions, or General Insurance), Quantitative Risk Analyst, Investment Strategist, and Data Scientist in Fintech.
University Support Services: The UCD Careers Network provides a bespoke service for BAFS students, including "MyCareer" portal access for exclusive actuarial vacancies and one-on-one "Quick Query" sessions to refine your professional brand. You’ll also benefit from the UCD Advantage Award, which recognizes the extra-curricular skills you gain, and the dedicated support of the Science Program Office in securing your high-credit Year 3 placement.
Employment Stats & Salary: UCD holds an enviable reputation, with over 95% of BAFS graduates in professional employment or further study within six months of graduation. In the current Irish market, Actuarial Trainees command some of the highest starting salaries for new graduates, typically ranging from €40,000 to €52,000, with fully qualified actuaries often earning well over €100,000 as they progress.
University–Industry Partnerships: Our program is deeply integrated with the global financial hub in Dublin (IFSC). We maintain active partnerships with firms like Susquehanna (SIG), Allianz, Mercer, and Deloitte, who not only host our students for six-month professional placements but also collaborate on "live" curriculum projects to ensure you're learning the most current market techniques.
Long-term Accreditation Value: This degree is one of the few internationally to offer the maximum level of exemptions from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) exams (Subjects CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, and CB2). This accreditation saves you years of intense post-graduate study, giving you a massive head start on your journey to becoming a Fellow of the Institute.
Graduation Outcomes: Our alumni are currently leading departments in international hubs like London, New York, and Hong Kong. Many have transitioned from traditional insurance roles into high-frequency trading, environmental risk modeling (ESG), and government policy advising, proving the immense versatility of the BAFS toolkit.
