Reputation & Employability

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At National University of Ireland Galway, the Law (BCL) isn’t just about learning legal theory — it’s about developing the confidence and practical skills you’ll need in real legal settings. From advocacy and research to professional conduct, the programme is built to help you experience how law works in practice, supported by specialist law facilities and hands-on learning opportunities. This balance between classroom learning and real-world application comes through clearly in how the degree is structured:

  • Moot court experience – you’ll take part in structured mooting exercises where you work in teams to research legal problems, prepare written submissions, and present oral arguments in a dedicated moot courtroom, closely mirroring real courtroom practice.

  • Professional work placement option – during third year, you can choose to complete a work placement in a law firm, public body, or legal organisation, gaining first-hand experience of professional legal environments and building valuable contacts.

  • Study abroad opportunities – year three also offers the chance to study at an international partner university, giving you a broader legal perspective and insight into how law operates in other jurisdictions.

  • Clinical legal education opportunities – senior students may engage in clinical projects linked to public bodies, NGOs, and community organisations, applying legal knowledge to real issues with social impact.

  • Law libraries and research spaces – you’ll have access to extensive legal collections, digital law databases, quiet study areas, and collaborative spaces that support both independent research and group work.

Together, these experiences ensure you graduate with more than academic knowledge — you leave with practical legal skills, professional confidence, and a clear understanding of how law operates in the real world.
