LLB Hons Law

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Trinity College Dublin TCD

Program Overview

The LLB (Hons) Law at Trinity College Dublin is designed for students who are curious about how rules shape society and want the confidence to think, argue, and solve problems like a lawyer. Over four years, you’ll build a strong legal foundation while developing the critical thinking and communication skills that open doors across law, business, and public life.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Foundations
You begin with the core building blocks of law, studying subjects like Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Torts, Equity, and Land Law. This year focuses on learning how to read cases, understand legal systems, and think analytically from day one.

Year 2 – Broadening perspective
In second year, you expand into areas such as EU Law and Jurisprudence while continuing with core legal studies. You’ll start to see how law operates beyond national borders and how legal theory connects to real-world decision-making.

Year 3 – Specialisation and choice
This is where the degree becomes more personal. You choose from a wide range of options like Human Rights, Media Law, Intellectual Property, Family Law, or Public International Law, allowing you to shape your degree around your interests.

Year 4 – Advanced study and independence
In your final year, you take advanced electives and complete a capstone project, developing strong research, writing, and argument skills. This year is about thinking independently and preparing confidently for professional or postgraduate paths.

Reputation and employability

Trinity’s Law School is Ireland’s oldest and one of its most respected, with graduates going on to careers in law, consulting, policy, international organisations, and business worldwide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Trinity’s School of Law, learning goes well beyond lectures. From early on, you’re encouraged to apply legal thinking in practical ways—through discussion-based classes, problem-solving exercises, and collaborative work that reflects how law is practiced in the real world. By the time you reach your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to step directly into professional legal environments through a structured clinical placement, giving you first-hand exposure to how legal principles operate outside the classroom and helping you graduate with confidence and clarity about your future path:

  • Clinical Legal Education placement in final year, where students work with real legal organisations across the public, private, and non-profit sectors

  • Lawyering and skills-based classes that focus on legal research, professional ethics, drafting, and advocacy

  • Study abroad options in third year, allowing students to experience different legal systems and international perspectives

  • Interactive assessments such as mock trials, case analysis, reflective journals, and group projects that build teamwork and communication skills

  • Access to Trinity’s law-focused libraries and research collections, supporting advanced legal research throughout the degree

  • Active law societies and student publications, offering opportunities to debate, write, and engage with contemporary legal issues beyond the curriculum

This hands-on approach ensures that when you graduate, you’re not just knowledgeable in law—you’re prepared to use it confidently in professional, academic, or international settings.

Progression & Future Opportunities

A law degree from Trinity opens up far more than one career path. Graduates go on to work as solicitors, barristers, legal advisors, and policy analysts, while others move into business, consulting, public service, and international organisations—roles where strong reasoning and communication skills are highly valued:

  • Career support throughout your degree: Trinity’s Careers Service works closely with law students, offering one-to-one career guidance, CV and interview coaching, skills workshops, and access to exclusive internship and graduate opportunities through the university’s career portal.

  • Strong employability outcomes: Trinity graduates are consistently recognised as among the most employable globally, reflecting the high regard employers have for a Trinity law education and the practical skills students graduate with.

  • Industry and professional exposure: Studying law in Dublin gives you direct access to Ireland’s legal, governmental, and business hubs, creating opportunities for internships, traineeships, and early professional experience during and after your degree.

  • Professional recognition: The LLB covers the core legal subjects required for progression into professional legal training in Ireland and is widely respected internationally as a solid foundation for legal and non-legal careers.

  • Versatile graduate outcomes: Beyond traditional legal practice, graduates successfully move into policy, corporate roles, NGOs, media, and international organisations, supported by the broad and transferable skills developed during the degree.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the LLB, many students choose to continue their studies with a postgraduate law degree, such as an LLM, to specialise in areas like international law, human rights, or commercial law, strengthening their expertise and career prospects even further.
