BSc Hons Cell and Molecular Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University College Dublin

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how life works at the microscopic level — how cells communicate, how DNA controls function, and how diseases begin — the BSc (Hons) in Cell & Molecular Biology at University College Dublin is designed for you. This programme is ideal for curious, science-driven students who want strong laboratory experience, modern biological knowledge, and a direct pathway into biomedical research, biotechnology, or postgraduate study.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

You begin by building a broad scientific foundation. Modules such as Cell Biology & Genetics, Scientific Enquiry, Life on Earth, and Organic & Biological Chemistry introduce how molecules form cells, how genetic information is stored, and how living systems function. At the same time, you start developing core laboratory and scientific-thinking skills that prepare you for advanced biological study.

Second Year

In second year, the focus shifts from understanding concepts to applying them. You study Principles of Cell & Molecular Biology, Biomolecular Laboratory Skills, and Scientific Communication, gaining hands-on experience with modern experimental techniques. This is where you start to feel like a real scientist — analysing data, working in labs, and learning how to present scientific findings clearly.

Third Year

By third year, you dive into specialised topics that explain how cells grow, adapt, and sometimes malfunction. Modules such as Advanced Cell Biology, Genetics and Recombinant DNA, Developmental Biology, and Plant Cell Biology explore how genetic information is manipulated, how organisms develop, and how cellular systems are controlled. You also engage with current research themes shaping modern biology.

Fourth Year

Your final year is where everything comes together. You complete a Research Project or Critical Literature Review, working on real scientific questions under academic supervision. Advanced modules such as Cell Biology of Cancer, Human Genetics & Disease, Biological Imaging, and The RNA World allow you to specialise in areas that match your interests — whether that is medical research, genetics, or biotechnology.

Focus Areas

Cell structure and function, molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology, developmental biology, disease mechanisms, and biological research techniques.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you will be able to design and perform laboratory experiments, analyse biological data, interpret scientific literature, and communicate research findings confidently — skills highly valued in research, healthcare, and biotechnology industries.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme is structured to meet internationally recognised scientific training standards and prepares graduates for careers in biomedical research, biotechnology laboratories, pharmaceutical industries, or progression to Master’s and Doctoral study.

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

University College Dublin is Ireland’s largest research university and consistently ranks among the top universities globally for Biological Sciences, offering strong industry links, research-led teaching, and excellent graduate employability in science and healthcare sectors.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCD, Cell & Molecular Biology is a hands-on degree from the very beginning. Alongside lectures, you’ll spend regular time in modern teaching laboratories, developing practical skills and learning how scientists investigate cells, genes, and disease. As you progress, your lab work becomes more advanced, leading to independent research and real-world experience that prepares you for scientific careers or postgraduate study.

This practical learning is built into the programme through:

  • Dedicated bioscience teaching laboratories used in core modules such as Biomolecular Lab Skills

  • Training in microscopy and molecular biology techniques, embedded across practical classes

  • A final-year research project or critical literature review, supervised by UCD academics

  • An optional science internship (Professional Placement) with research labs, biotech firms, or public sector organisations

  • Summer research and industry internships supported through UCD Science

  • Group-based laboratory work, helping you build teamwork and communication skills

  • Access to UCD’s libraries and digital scientific resources for research and data analysis

Progression & Future Opportunities

A Cell & Molecular Biology degree from UCD opens up strong career options in life sciences and healthcare. Graduates commonly move into roles such as Research Assistant, Laboratory or Clinical Technician, Quality Control/QA Analyst, or Scientific Officer, supported by the practical skills and research experience gained during the programme:

  • Career support from day one – UCD’s Careers Network offers personalised guidance, CV and interview support, employer events, and access to science-focused job opportunities.

  • Strong graduate outcomes – UCD reports high levels of employment or further study shortly after graduation, reflecting strong demand for life science graduates.

  • Industry connections – Through NovaUCD, students benefit from links with biotech, pharmaceutical, and research organisations that support internships and graduate roles.

  • Internships and work experience – Structured science internships allow students to gain real workplace experience before graduating.

  • Internationally recognised qualification – This Level 8 honours degree is widely recognised by employers and postgraduate institutions.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates often progress to MSc programmes in biotechnology, biomedical science, molecular medicine, or genetics, or continue to PhD research at UCD or other leading universities.
