Program Overview

The Physics (Common Entry) program at the University of Limerick is a four-year honours degree that gives you flexibility to specialise in either Applied Physics or Mathematics & Physics after your first semester. It suits students who are curious about how the universe works, enjoy problem-solving, and want to apply physics to cutting-edge technologies in areas like semiconductors, renewable energy, and medical devices.


Curriculum Structure

First Year

You’ll build a strong foundation in physics and mathematics while exploring chemistry and measurement techniques. Modules include Mechanics/Heat/Electricity/Magnetism (PH4131), Measurement & Properties of Matter (PH4051), Calculus 1 (MS4021), Linear Algebra 1 (MS4131), and General Chemistry 1 (CH4701). By the end of Semester 1, you’ll choose between the Applied Physics or Mathematics & Physics pathway.

Second Year

Applied Physics students continue with Physical Chemistry and Electronics, while Mathematics & Physics students strengthen their mathematical skills. Both streams cover Thermal Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Electromagnetism, supported by laboratory classes that link theory with practice.

Third Year

You’ll deepen your expertise in advanced physics topics. Modules include Solid State Physics, Optics, and Semiconductors, alongside laboratory work in instrumentation and measurement. Students also begin preparing for their Cooperative Education placement, gaining real-world industry experience.

Fourth Year

The final year emphasizes specialization and independent research. Modules include Nanotechnology, Lasers & Optoelectronics, and Materials Science, alongside a Capstone Research Project where you work with UL’s research groups on topics such as flow batteries, nanoplasmonics, graphene, and biomedical microdevices.
