Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Limerick

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Limerick gives you a rich, interdisciplinary education in how individual minds work and how societies function, combining psychological insight with sociological understanding of group structures and social change. It suits students who want to explore human behaviour from both personal and societal perspectives, preparing you for careers in research, social services, policy, community work and beyond.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

In the first year you’ll build foundational knowledge in both psychology and sociology, with introductory units that help you understand the basic theories and methods of each discipline. You begin with modules such as Introduction to Sociology and Psychology and Everyday Life, which explore social structures, cultural norms and individual behaviour, alongside core research methods in both fields. Through Practical Psychology or equivalent introductory work, you’ll also start developing skills in observation, data interpretation and critical thinking that are central to both areas.

Year 2

Second year deepens your understanding with more specialised psychological and sociological topics. Units like Social Psychology and Sociology of Media (or similar) examine how people behave in social contexts and how societal institutions shape beliefs and interactions. You’ll also engage with Personality and Biological Basis of Behaviour to understand individual differences, and begin using more advanced research approaches that prepare you for independent work.

Year 3

In your final year you’ll bring together theory and practice, often completing a substantial research project in an area of your choice — for example, a study linking psychological factors with social dynamics. Alongside advanced units in both psychology and sociology, you’ll have opportunities to undertake field placements or cooperative learning experiences, apply mixed research methods, and explore topics such as Gender: Sociological Perspectives or Social Issues in depth. This year is your chance to integrate knowledge from both disciplines into a coherent, independent academic output.
