4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Limerick

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Limerick is a four-year honours degree that explores the scientific study of mind and behaviour, combining theoretical foundations with practical research skills. It suits students eager to understand how people think, feel and behave and offers active engagement with empirical methods, cognitive processes and real psychological investigation.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

In the first year you’ll build your analytical and scientific foundation through introductory modules that cover cognitive psychology, biological psychology, social psychology and research methods and statistics. These early units introduce you to the central questions of psychology and the scientific approaches used to investigate human behaviour, preparing you for more specialised study.

Year 2

In your second year you’ll deepen your understanding with studies in developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and explore advanced research methods. This stage emphasises both lab-based and theoretical work, allowing you to apply scientific methods in analysing behaviour and understanding how psychological theories relate to everyday life.

Year 3

The third year builds on earlier studies, often offering electives and more advanced units such as cognitive neuroscience and social behaviour. You’ll engage in more complex research designs and begin planning your independent investigations, integrating your growing knowledge across multiple sub-disciplines of psychology.

Year 4

In the final year you’ll complete a substantive research project that showcases your ability to design, conduct and analyse an independent study, synthesising your scientific and practical skills. Advanced topics may include psychological measurement, applied psychology, and opportunities to undertake study abroad or work-relevant experience if available.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Limerick, the BSc in Psychology is deeply rooted in hands-on scientific learning and real research practice, ensuring you graduate with both strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Throughout the programme you’ll actively engage in laboratory classes, group research projects, independent investigations and applied modules, working with specialist facilities designed for psychological science. These experiences help you develop skills in experimental design, data collection and critical analysis — all of which are essential for both professional psychology roles and postgraduate study:

Here’s how experiential learning is built into the degree and supported by available facilities:

  • Psychology Laboratory Classes and Group Research Exercises: Students participate in structured lab sessions and collaborative research tasks integrated across the curriculum, developing practical research skills from early years and culminating in an independent final-year research project.

  • Specialist Research Facilities in the Department of Psychology: You have access to dedicated labs including the Social Cognition Lab, Groups and Identities Lab, Cognition Lab and Health and Psychophysiology Lab — spaces equipped for computer-based experiments, qualitative research, behavioural testing and physiological measurement

  • Hands-On Research Tools and Methods: Practical modules involve real research methods and statistical practice, giving you experience with experimental design, data analysis and research reporting — key competencies for graduate-level psychologists.

  • Collaborative Supported Research: The Department fosters opportunities to participate in research projects, engage with faculty research groups and attend seminars that broaden your understanding of current psychological science and connect you with ongoing research themes.

  • Integrated Work Experience / Electives: While not mandatory, the programme structure includes options like Co-operative Education (Co-op) or relevant placements, giving you the chance to apply your psychology skills in real-world contexts and workplace settings.
