BA Hons Film

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Trinity College Dublin TCD

Program Overview

The B.A. Honours in Film at Trinity College Dublin is designed for students who are passionate about cinema and want to understand how films reflect, shape, and challenge culture and society. The program combines critical thinking with creative practice, making it ideal for students interested in film history, theory, screenwriting, and contemporary media analysis.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of film studies, focusing on how cinema developed as an art form and cultural medium. Core modules such as Introduction to Film Analysis and Hollywood and World Cinema help students learn how to watch films critically, while Introduction to Documentary Theory and Practice and Film Production and Editing provide early exposure to practical and creative techniques.

Year 2

The second year deepens both analytical and creative skills, allowing students to engage more actively with filmmaking and criticism. Modules like Introduction to Screenwriting and Video Essays encourage students to develop original ideas and visual storytelling skills, while European Cinema and Ireland and the Cinema broaden understanding of film in national and international contexts. Digital media studies also become more prominent at this stage.

Years 3–4

In the final years, students gain greater independence and the freedom to specialise in areas that match their interests. Advanced options such as Writing for the Big Screen, Women and Film, Film Festival Studies, and Digital Theory and Practice allow students to explore contemporary issues and creative forms in depth. The degree concludes with a Capstone project, which may take the form of a dissertation, screenplay with critical commentary, or a video essay supported by analytical work.
