BA Communication and Information Studies

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Groningen

Program Overview

This programme offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to understanding how communication works across media, cultures, and organisations, combining insights from linguistics, psychology, media, and sociology. It’s ideal for students who are curious about how messages influence people and want to design effective communication strategies in a digital, global world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You begin by building a strong foundation in communication theory and academic skills. Core modules like Academic Skills 1, Corporate and Organisational Communication 1, and Persuasive Communication introduce you to how communication works in professional environments and how messages influence audiences.

Alongside this, you’ll explore communication from multiple perspectives—language, media, and society—while developing essential research and analytical skills that prepare you for more advanced study.

Year 2

In the second year, you deepen your understanding of communication processes and start applying theory to real-world contexts. You’ll engage with topics such as media analysis, digital communication, and research methods, learning how to analyse communication problems and design solutions.

This year also focuses on developing your ability to conduct independent research, including working with methodology and statistics, which are essential for evaluating communication strategies effectively.

Year 3

In your final year, you specialise and bring everything together through advanced projects and your Bachelor’s thesis. You’ll work on complex communication challenges—such as digital media strategies, intercultural communication, or organisational communication—while refining your analytical and advisory skills.

This stage prepares you for professional roles by focusing on designing, implementing, and evaluating communication interventions in real-world scenarios.
