Bachelor's in Psychology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Program Overview

VU Amsterdam's Bachelor's in Psychology teaches you to understand, investigate, and change behavior from multiple perspectives—spanning everything from brain activity to social media dynamics. Whether you're drawn to helping people through clinical work, exploring organizational behavior, or conducting cutting-edge research, this program equips you with both the scientific knowledge and practical skills to make a real impact.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 & 2: Building Your Foundation

In your first two years, you'll develop a strong foundational knowledge across core psychological domains. You'll study brain and behaviour, developmental psychology, social interaction, and mental health, while learning how to conduct scientific research and analyze human behavior. Beyond theory, you'll gain practical skills that define professional psychology—including Conversation Techniques, where you'll learn active listening, confidential communication, and asking the right questions that you'll rely on throughout your career. The program also introduces you to Biological Psychology, Big Data in Psychology, and the Interplay of Genes and Environment, giving you early exposure to how genetics and cognitive processes shape human behavior.

Year 3: Specialization & Real-World Research

In your third year, everything shifts toward depth and specialization. You'll gain access to VU's Brain & Behavioural Lab—a state-of-the-art research environment where you can measure brain activity, emotions, and behavior using cutting-edge equipment. Here, you'll design experiments, collect real data, and experience how psychological research actually works in practice rather than just from textbooks. You'll choose one of four specialized tracks—Clinical Psychology, Psychopathology/Health/Prevention, Social & Organisational Psychology, or Genes, Cognition & Behaviour—allowing you to tailor your studies to your career ambitions.

Focus Areas

Clinical Psychology (ideal if you want to help people with mental health challenges); Psychopathology, Prevention and Health (exploring causes and treatment of mental disorders); Social & Organisational Psychology (understanding behavior in groups and workplaces); Biological and Cognitive Psychology (diving deep into brain function, memory, language, and genetics).

Learning Outcomes

You'll develop the ability to understand behavior from multiple perspectives, apply scientific knowledge to real-world problems, conduct rigorous psychological research, and use psychological insights to improve people's lives across healthcare, education, policy, and organizational contexts. You'll also build critical thinking skills about research methods, ethical implications, and how to explain complex psychological concepts in straightforward ways.

Professional Alignment

Most psychology graduates continue to specialized master's programs to become clinical psychologists, health psychologists, or child psychologists. However, you can also launch directly into roles as a research assistant, policy officer, or behavioral advisor in organizations, schools, and government agencies. Real-world applications include developing mental resilience campaigns, researching online addiction solutions, collaborating on therapies for anxiety and depression, and advising institutions on maintaining people's health and motivation.

Reputation & Employability

VU Amsterdam's psychology program is taught by researchers with extensive expertise in cutting-edge developments. The program is distinguished by its unique offerings, including access to twin studies and the Brain & Behavioural Lab with state-of-the-art equipment. Graduates report strong career outcomes across both clinical and research pathways, with many pursuing PhD studies after completing the Research Master's programs.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Bachelor's in Psychology, you'll dive into hands-on experiential learning right from the start, building practical skills through cutting-edge facilities tailored to behavioral and psychological research. The program leverages the university's interdisciplinary VU Behavioural Lab (VBL), a hub for experimental behavioral studies that brings together psychology with fields like economics and organizational behavior, giving you access to specialized lab spaces, an active participant pool for real-world experiments, and advanced software and hardware for data collection and analysis. This setup lets you apply classroom theory immediately, whether testing human responses or collaborating on behavioral studies, all while boosting your research skills in a professional environment.

Here are some standout ways you'll gain practical experience specific to the Psychology program:
- VU Behavioural Lab (VBL): Work in dedicated psychology labs for experimental research, using cutting-edge software, hardware, and a participant pool to run behavioral experiments on topics like cognition and group dynamics.
- Interdisciplinary research collaborations: Join scholars from psychology, behavioral economics, and more to design and execute studies, fostering group projects that mirror real research teams.
- Clinical Psychology research programs: Engage with ongoing projects on emotion regulation, global mental health, digital interventions, and WHO-partnered work on psychological treatments for diverse populations like refugees.
- O|2 Research Labs: Access biochemical and specialized labs in the Human Life Sciences building for psychology-related studies on human behavior and cognition.

These opportunities prepare you perfectly for careers in research, consulting, or clinical work—imagine contributing to WHO-backed interventions as an undergrad! Check out the full list of VU research facilities here: [vu.nl/en/about-vu/more-about/research-facilities].

Progression & Future Opportunities

At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Bachelor's in Psychology, you'll dive into hands-on experiential learning right from the start, building practical skills through cutting-edge research facilities tailored to psychology. Whether it's running experiments on cognition, behavior, or brain processes, our Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences gives you direct access to tools like EEG systems, eye-tracking tech, and virtual reality setups that let you collect real data and analyze human minds in action. You'll work in interdisciplinary labs where psychology meets neuroscience and behavioral science, gaining the confidence to apply what you learn immediately.

This means opportunities like:
- Advanced labs for experimental research: Use multiple EEG, eye-tracking, and VR labs in the Cognitive Psychology section, plus the Spinoza Neuroimaging Centre with 3T and 7T MRI scanners for brain studies.
- VU Behavioural Lab (VBL): A dedicated hub for psychology and behavioral experiments, offering specialized lab spaces, an active participant pool, cutting-edge software and hardware, and a centralized digital platform for running group projects and studies.
