Program Overview

The BEAR Fine Art bachelor’s programme at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem is a great choice for students who want to explore contemporary art, experiment with different ideas and develop their own creative voice. Throughout the four years, you will work with different materials, techniques and artistic approaches while learning how to research, discuss and present your work and gradually build your own professional art practice.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Exploring Your Creative Direction: The first year gives you plenty of opportunities to experiment with materials, techniques and new ideas while getting familiar with contemporary art. You will work on areas such as Theme Studio 2D, Theme Studio 3D and artistic and theoretical disciplines, while theory classes, discussions and field trips help you understand how your work connects to the wider art world.

Year 2 – Developing Your Own Ideas: In the second year, you become more independent and start moving beyond structured assignments towards projects based on your own interests. Through Tutor Base, individual and collective projects and experimentation, you will learn to make creative choices, discuss your work and develop a clearer direction as an artist.

Year 3 – Strengthening Your Artistic Practice: The third year focuses on developing a stronger and more recognisable artistic direction. Through Studio Practice and Research and Practitioners, you will explore how your projects relate to one another, conduct research and make more thoughtful decisions about the ideas, materials and methods behind your work.

Year 4 – Preparing for Your Professional Career: In the final year, you bring together everything you have learned and develop a focused body of work for your graduation exhibition. You will also explore practical professional skills such as funding applications, residencies, self-organisation and starting a business, helping you prepare for life as an independent artist.

Study Abroad / Industrial Placement: A separate full-year Industrial Placement Year is not a standard part of the programme, but exchange opportunities are available during the degree.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn how to experiment with different materials and techniques, conduct artistic research and think critically about your creative decisions. By graduation, you will be able to develop an independent artistic practice, create a strong body of work, position your work within contemporary art and handle the practical aspects of working as a professional artist.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme leads to a Bachelor of Fine Art qualification and prepares graduates for careers in areas such as visual arts, filmmaking, photography, curating, art criticism and arts organisation.
