Program Overview

The Bachelor’s in Moving Image at ArtEZ University of the Arts is a creative, hands-on programme for students who want to explore film, video, photography, animation and other forms of moving image. Over four years, you will build strong technical and artistic skills, experiment with different media, develop your own creative style and learn how to turn ideas into original visual projects.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundation: The first year is all about exploring different ways of creating moving images and developing your technical skills. You will work with areas such as Video, Film, Photography, Storyboard, Audio Editing and Video Installation, while also learning about image, media, perception and technology through theory classes.

Year 2 – Developing Your Own Ideas: In the second year, you become more independent and start developing projects based on your own interests. You will explore subjects such as Film & Video, Image Design and Sound Design, alongside practical areas including cinematography, directing, acting, VR and sound, while Authorship Methodologies, Creative Process and Moving Image Theory help you strengthen your artistic thinking.

Year 3 – Experimentation and Professional Development: The third year gives you more freedom to develop larger projects and build a portfolio that reflects your creative identity. You can explore Interactive Media, Immersive (non)fiction, Experimental Technologies, Research and Creative Process, with opportunities for an exchange, internship or independent project.

Year 4 – Graduation and Launching Your Career: The final year focuses on bringing everything you have learned together in a major graduation project and dissertation. With guidance from tutors and professionals, you refine your work and present your final project at the AKI ArtEZ Finals exhibition, giving you an opportunity to showcase your creative abilities to a wider audience.

Study Abroad / Industrial Placement: A separate full-year Study Abroad or Industrial Placement Year is not a standard part of the programme, but students can undertake an exchange, internship or independent project during the third year.

Focus Areas

Film and video, photography, animation, cinematography, editing, sound design, storytelling, directing, interactive and immersive media, experimental technologies, moving-image theory, creative processes and visual research.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn to think critically and creatively about moving images, develop your own visual language and experiment confidently with different media and technologies. By graduation, you will be able to independently develop concepts, carry out artistic research and turn your ideas into original moving-image projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme leads to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and prepares graduates for creative careers in areas such as filmmaking, cinematography, video art, digital communication and other forms of visual media. ArtEZ also supports students in preparing for professional life through career guidance, networking opportunities and entrepreneurship support.
