4 Years Part Time Bachelors Program
The Bachelor in Data Science and Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is built for students who want to understand how data shapes the modern world — from artificial intelligence and smart systems to cybersecurity and digital platforms. It is a great choice if you enjoy mathematics, logical thinking, and programming, and want to turn raw data into meaningful real-world solutions.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year focuses on building strong technical foundations. You study subjects such as Linear Algebra, Calculus, Probability and Data Analysis, Programming, and Introduction to Data Science, helping you develop mathematical confidence and coding skills from the start. These modules also introduce how data is collected, structured, and interpreted in practical situations.
Year 2
In the second year, you move deeper into data systems and intelligent models through courses like Statistical Learning, Databases, Machine Learning I, Predictive Modeling, and Data Protection and Cybersecurity. You begin working with real datasets, learning how to design secure systems and extract patterns that support decision-making in business and technology.
Year 3
Your third year becomes more applied and industry-focused. Modules such as Machine Learning II, Optimization and Analytics, Web Applications, Bayesian Data Analysis, and Machine Learning Applications train you to build advanced models and deploy them in real digital environments. You also gain experience combining data science with software development and business use cases.
Year 4
In the final year, you specialise and bring everything together. You complete the Data Science Project and your Bachelor’s Thesis, working independently on a real technical or research problem. You can also choose electives such as Web Analytics, Computer Vision, Data Integration and Visualization, Cybersecurity Engineering, or Machine Learning in Healthcare, allowing you to shape the degree around your career goals.
Focus areas
Data science, machine learning, statistics, computer science, big data systems, data visualization, predictive modelling, cybersecurity.
Learning outcomes
Graduates develop the ability to analyse complex datasets, design intelligent models, build scalable data systems, and communicate insights clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
The programme follows recognised European engineering education standards, ensuring your qualification is valued by employers across Europe and internationally.
Reputation (employability rankings)
UC3M is known for strong graduate outcomes, with official surveys showing that around 95 percent of graduates find employment related to their studies within one year, reflecting the high demand for data science skills in today’s job market.
At UC3M, learning data science is not just about studying algorithms — it’s about applying them to real data, real systems, and real challenges. From your first year, you’ll work on hands-on assignments and programming tasks, and as you progress, you’ll build predictive models, data platforms, and intelligent applications in project-based courses. All of this takes place at UC3M’s Leganés Engineering Campus, home to specialised computing facilities, research labs, and digital learning environments designed for technology and data-driven studies.
As you move from classroom learning to real-world practice, you’ll benefit from:
Project-based coursework, including the Data Science Project and Machine Learning Applications, where you analyse real datasets and develop functioning data solutions.
Bachelor’s Thesis, a final-year capstone project where you independently solve a real data science or engineering problem, often linked to research groups or industry topics.
External internships, offered as credited academic placements, allowing you to gain professional experience while completing your degree.
Research laboratories and institutes, where students can join active research groups in areas such as machine learning, data systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.
Specialised computer laboratories at the Leganés campus, equipped for programming, data modelling, simulation, and software development.
University libraries and digital resources, providing access to scientific databases, journals, and collaborative study spaces for research and project work.
Career and company engagement events, where technology firms and startups connect with UC3M students for recruitment, internships, and project collaboration.
