Bachelors in History - Classical Philology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Complutense University of Madrid UCM

Program Overview

Historically the studies of Ancient History and Classical Philology have been closely linked for obvious scientific reasons. Despite this, the successive reforms of the study plans of university degrees have had a drift that has led to an absolutely unscientific separation between both disciplines. This drift has now led to some Degrees in which the presence of subjects from one discipline in another is reduced to a semester of History of Greece and Rome in Classical Philology, and a semester of Language(to choose between English, French, German, Latin or classical Greek) in History. The consequence of this situation, after passing through various study plans, are promotions, many already, of graduates in History, with a specialty in Ancient History, who do not know the classical languages and, consequently, cannot directly consult the sources, nor ultimately understand them in their true dimension, and graduates in Classical Philology with huge gaps in their historical training and, like those, limited in their ability to fully understand the texts with which they work.
