Bachelor's degree in Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Barcelona

Program Overview

This program gives you a solid grounding in modern biology, from molecular processes inside cells to ecosystems and environmental systems. It is designed for students who are genuinely interested in life sciences, enjoy practical lab work, and want to explore careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, or environmental science.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, you build the essential scientific foundation needed for advanced biology. You study core subjects like Biology I and II, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, The Earth System, Statistics, and Structural Biochemistry, which help you understand how living systems are built and how they function from a physical and chemical point of view. This year is mainly about developing strong analytical skills and getting comfortable with laboratory work.

Year 2

The second year takes you deeper into how living organisms function and interact. You study Animal Physiology, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology I and II, Molecular Genetics, and Genetic Analysis. This helps you understand how organisms are structured, how they reproduce, and how genetic information controls life processes.

Year 3

In the third year, the focus shifts toward more complex biological systems and ecological relationships. You study Cell Biology, Evolution, Evolutionary Ecology, Metabolic Biochemistry, Plant Physiology I and II, and Ecology of Communities and Ecosystems. This year prepares you to think more like a researcher by connecting molecular biology with real-world ecosystems.

Year 4

The final year is more flexible and focused on specialization and practical application. You complete training in Experimental Design and Data Analysis and a Final Year Project (Bachelor’s Thesis). You also choose from advanced electives such as Immunology, Bioinformatics, Genetic Engineering, Cancer Biology, Cell Cultures, Virology, and Biotechnology-related subjects, allowing you to shape your academic and career direction.

Focus Areas

Molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, ecology and environmental biology, physiology, biotechnology, evolution, biodiversity, conservation biology, and experimental research methods.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, you will be able to understand biological systems from molecular to ecosystem level, design and carry out laboratory experiments, analyze scientific data, and communicate research findings clearly. You will also develop strong problem-solving skills and a research-oriented mindset.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This degree follows the European Higher Education Area framework and is designed to prepare students for further studies and professional work in research institutions, biotechnology industries, healthcare-related fields, and environmental organizations.
