Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Linnaeus University, the Design + Change programme is all about learning through real experience, not just theory. From day one, you are actively working on design projects that reflect real societal and environmental challenges, helping you build practical skills while understanding how design can create meaningful change. You will collaborate with classmates, communities, and organisations, which gives you early exposure to how designers actually work in the real world.

The learning environment feels more like a creative studio than a traditional classroom—you experiment, test ideas, and develop solutions using a wide range of materials and tools, while being guided by experienced designers and researchers. This hands-on, exploratory approach ensures that by the time you graduate, you already have strong practical experience and a professional-level portfolio:

  • Project-based learning: You learn through continuous design projects, both individual and group-based, rather than exam-heavy study
  • Real-world collaboration: Work with local organisations, communities, and industry partners on actual design challenges
  • Creative studio practice: Explore materials and mediums like ceramics, wood, textiles, photography, and video
  • Workshops and prototyping spaces: Access to design labs and creative workshops where you can build, test, and refine your ideas
  • Mentorship from practitioners: Learn directly from active designers, artists, and researchers who guide your projects
  • Field visits and study trips: Gain exposure to real design environments and expand your professional network
  • Portfolio-focused learning: Every project contributes to building a strong, industry-ready portfolio
  • International opportunities: Options for exchange studies, internships, and global exposure during your degree
