Department of English Linguistics was founded in 1972 as an evening program of English Language and Literature Department in the Faculty of Social and Administrative Sciences. Following a restructuring process carried out by the Turkish Council of Higher Education, the program gained the status of major field of study in 1982 as a part of Western Languages and Literatures Department. In 1994, English Linguistics became the first linguistics department in Turkey, contributing to the acknowledgement and recognition of the discipline in Turkey as a field of social sciences due to its efforts to bring in a scientific perspective in studying language and educate students at undergraduate and graduate levels.
