Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in New Media Design

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in New Media Design at RIT Dubai is a four-year undergraduate degree that trains students to become creative and technical designers of digital experiences, blending visual communication, interaction, motion graphics, 3D modelling, and user experience design. It suits students who are passionate about shaping interactive digital products, apps, interfaces, and multimedia, and who want to work at the forefront of design innovation in tech and creative industries.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build a solid foundation in both art and new media with courses such as New Media Design Interactive I, Drawing I, 2D Design I, and 4D Design, where they learn basic visual composition, time-based media principles, and introductory design tools. These modules introduce core concepts of visual communication, multimedia creation, and design thinking, engaging students in projects that explore the relationship between form, movement, and digital media. Introducing Digital Survey I & II also familiarises learners with essential digital technologies and multimedia workflows that underpin interactive and screen-based design.

Year 2:
The second year deepens technical and conceptual skills with units such as New Media Interactive Design and Algorithmic Problem Solving I & II, New Media Design Elements II, New Media Design 3D, and New Media Design Animation, where students begin to master interactive design principles, 3D asset creation, and animation workflows. Students explore information architecture, user interaction logic, spatial media creation, and visual storytelling while developing assets for a range of platforms, from web interfaces to immersive environments. This year blends visual design with programming logic and motion concepts, equipping learners with both aesthetic and technical fluency.

Year 3:
In the third year, learners take advanced design courses such as New Media Design Elements III, Graphical User Interface, New Media Design Interactive III, and New Media Design Motion Graphics, which focus on user-centred interface design, advanced interactive experiences, and dynamic visual communication. These modules emphasise usability research, prototype development, human factors, and sophisticated motion aesthetics, preparing students to create professional digital products and brand experiences. Extended studio projects encourage integration of 3D, animation, interactivity, and motion within design systems that respond to real-world needs.

Year 4:
In the final year, students work on capstone and professional practice modules such as New Media Design Capstone I & II, New Media Design Interactive IV, and New Media Design Experimental, where they produce complex interactive projects or prototypes that synthesise their accumulated design, technical, and creative skills. Capstone I also focuses on career preparation, portfolio development, and understanding industry workflows, while Interactive IV and Experimental empower students to push boundaries with innovative solutions and emerging technologies. These culminating experiences prepare students for professional practice or postgraduate study by showcasing their ability to solve design problems and create engaging digital experiences.
