Bioengineering Major

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

New York University Abu Dhabi

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi blends engineering principles with biological and medical applications, preparing students to solve problems from the cellular to the systems level, including medical and biological device design. It suits students with strong interests in mathematics, physics, biology and interdisciplinary innovation who want to work on cutting-edge technological solutions in healthcare, biotechnology and research.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build their scientific and mathematical foundations with Foundations of Science 1–4 courses in physics, chemistry and biology, alongside Calculus with Applications to Science and Engineering and Computer Programming for Engineers. These units equip learners with analytical, experimental and computational skills that are critical for understanding complex biological and engineering systems.

Year 2:
During the second year, students progress to core engineering fundamentals such as Engineering Statics, Conservation Laws in Engineering, Digital Logic, and Numerical Methods, complemented by introductory bioengineering courses like Bioengineering Principles and Biomechanics. This phase deepens understanding of mechanical and electrical principles applied to biological contexts, helping students link physical laws with living systems behaviour and device functionality.

Year 3:
In the third year, students explore discipline-specific bioengineering topics such as Biotransport Phenomena, Bioimaging, and Biomaterials, integrating engineering, biology and materials science. Elective options allow focus on areas like Bioinstrumentation and Biomolecular Engineering, reflecting the programme’s flexibility to tailor learning towards specialised interests.

Year 4:
The final year centres on the Senior Design Capstone Project I & II, a substantial multi-semester engineering design experience where students apply accumulated knowledge to real-world bioengineering challenges. Additional electives and project-based work support professional readiness, innovation and problem-solving in multidisciplinary contexts.

Focus areas (in a string):
Bioengineering principles; biomechanics; biotransport phenomena; bioimaging; biomaterials; digital logic and numerical methods; engineering statics; capstone design.

Learning outcomes (in a string):
Identify and solve complex engineering problems; apply engineering design to biological systems; communicate effectively; recognise ethical and professional responsibilities; conduct experimentation and data analysis; engage in lifelong learning.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The bioengineering programme is accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the UAE Ministry of Education and is structured for future ABET accreditation after its first graduating class, aligning with international standards in engineering education.

Reputation (employability rankings):
NYU Abu Dhabi is a globally recognised research university with strong liberal arts and STEM programmes, consistently ranked among the top universities in the region. Its engineering graduates are highly regarded in industry and research sectors due to the university’s emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship and global perspectives.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The experiential learning is supported by these specific facilities and program structures:

  • Specialized Biomedical Laboratories: The department operates dedicated teaching and research labs, such as the Biomedical Instrumentation Lab, Biomedical Signal Processing Lab, Biomechanics Lab, and Tissue Engineering & Biomaterials Lab.

  • University Core Research Facilities: Students have access to university-wide advanced facilities, including the Central Imaging Facility, Micro/Nano Fabrication Facility (Clean Room), and the Advanced Materials Characterization Lab.

  • Industry-Standard Software: Students are trained in key biomedical engineering software, which includes MATLAB for computation and signal/image processing, SolidWorks or similar for medical device CAD design, and specialized software for finite element analysis (e.g., ANSYS) and physiological modelling (e.g., COMSOL).

  • Capstone Senior Design Project: A major Senior Design Project spans the final year, requiring student teams to design, prototype, and test a biomedical device or system, often with clinical or industry input.

  • Mandatory Cooperative Education (Co-op): Students must complete the Cooperative Education (Co-op) program, involving at least one semester of full-time, paid work experience with a hospital, medical device company, or research institute.

  • Research Institutes and Centers: Students can engage in cutting-edge research through the university's Healthcare Engineering Innovation Center (HEIC) and the KU Biomedical Engineering Research Center (BRC), working on projects in areas like medical robotics, neuroengineering, and regenerative medicine.
