Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronic Engineering) (Honours)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Curtin University Dubai

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronic Engineering at Curtin University Malaysia is a four-year undergraduate programme that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer systems to prepare students to design, build, and operate smart machines, robotics, and automated systems. It suits students who are passionate about automation, robotics, intelligent systems, and interdisciplinary engineering careers across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, mining, energy, and healthcare.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students complete a common Engineering Foundation Year that introduces core engineering concepts in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering Mechanics while developing fundamental problem-solving and analytical skills. This foundation ensures a solid grasp of scientific principles that underpin mechanical, electrical, and computing topics later in the degree and includes introductory labs and technical communication practice.

Year 2:
In the second year, students begin focused mechatronics courses such as Microcontroller Project, Machine Dynamics, Electrical Circuits, and Foundations of Digital Design, which connect embedded electronics, mechanical motion, and system logic. Modules like Data Structures and Algorithms and Signals and Systems deepen computational thinking and signals analysis, while the Mechatronics Design Project develops hands-on experience in building and testing integrated electromechanical systems.

Year 3:
The third year advances practical and intelligent system skills with projects like Robot Manipulation Project and courses in Computer Aided Drawing and Engineering Modelling, Intelligent Agents, and Embedded Systems Engineering. Students also explore Introduction to Autonomous Robots and gain exposure to real industry practices, strengthening their ability to develop smart, autonomous systems and engineer solutions for complex challenges.

Year 4:
In the final year, learners focus on advanced control, modelling, and research with units such as Machine Learning, Dynamic Modelling and Control, and a two-part Mechatronic Engineering Research Project where they apply theory to innovate and solve real design issues. The Mechatronics Automation Project and Professional Engineering Management and Practice modules prepare students for professional environments, integrating technical expertise with management and ethical understanding before graduation.

Focus areas (in a string):
Mechanical dynamics, electrical circuits, digital design, microcontrollers, signals and systems, robotics manipulation, embedded systems, autonomous robotics, machine learning, control systems, automation project work.

Learning outcomes (in a string):
Apply engineering fundamentals to mechatronic systems; design, analyse, and integrate mechanical, electrical, and computing components; develop intelligent and automated solutions; execute research and development projects; communicate and manage engineering work professionally.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and recognised by professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Engineers Australia, ensuring that it meets national and international quality standards for engineering education.
